It's very useful if you mention what version of OSX you are running. You will find that information "under the Apple" on the extreme left of the finder desktop. Then select "About this Mac"
Because the Apple GUI runs on top of BSD un*x (They don't use WINDOZE to look after missile silos....) you are probably out of luck. Only if you have enabled "root" and remember THAT password will you be able to solve the problem.
Most likely, you will have to reinstall the O/S, which is time consuming but will solve your problem. Of course, this time, you will remember your password, won't you. (You are in good company. I've done the same thing...)
It sounds as though you may be new to the Mac. If so, welcome.
There is tons of help available on the net. Sometimes, I just go to "ask.com" and just ask a question. (Or google or whatever)
You will most likely find the definitive answer somewhere.
I have had wonderful luck with "www.powermax.com" as they have a section called "Ask Jacob"
Hope this helps!

If you are running OS X put the appropriate system disk in the disk drive. Boot up using the c key. Once booted go up to the file menu and go to the reset password menu and reset your password.
