Also, is it new? Same thing happened with mine when I first bought it maybe 72 hours of purchase. Took it to the Apple store and it was deemed defective. If it isn't new, then you will have to pay for them to look at it, so consider your options. If you've had it for more than 2 years, then you can go with cssidy's 2 suggestion and buy a new 3G for $99 bucks. It would probably be the cheapest option

Did it get wet? If not you need a new logic board. if it DID get wet, try to open it and clean it out. There is a step by step guide too that explains a little bit at eachsteps what you have to do : iPhone screen repair. You can buy the touch screens online too. There are also iphone repair companies that do it for you.

Iphone will not turn on, if I connect it to my computer it makes a noise but nothing happens on the screen, I have tried holding down the on/off and the home buttons.

Download the latest iTunes to your computer and reset the iPhone. Then re-sync it.

Reset

To reset iPhone, press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least 10 seconds. During this time, a red "power off" slider may appear and the screen may go black, but do not release Sleep/Wake and Home buttons until the Apple logo appears.

If iPhone won't turn on, or the display freezes or doesn't respond

  1. Press and hold the Home button for at least six seconds, until the application you were using quits.
  2. If that doesn't work, turn iPhone off and turn it on again. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button on top of iPhone for a few seconds until a red slider appears, and then slide the slider. Then press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.
  3. If that doesn't work, reset iPhone. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears

More resets:

Try This:
1. Remove Sim Card
2. Hold in 'Home' button and 'On/Off' button together until Apple logo appears
3. Replace Sim Card
4. Hold in 'Home' button and 'On/Off' button together until normal phone screen appears.

Also, Try this:
1.) Shut down the iPhone 3G.
2.) Start up iTunes
3.) Hold down HOME button on the iPhone 3G
4.) While keeping the HOME button depressed, plug in the Sync cable
5.) A message will pop up to ask if you want to reset.
6.) Just click YES and the reset process should start.

Got a new Iphone 3Gs and all seems to be ok but when I connect it to my pc all I get is a "iTunes cannot connect to this iPhone because of an unknown error". I'm hoping its something simple that I've just...

If your using a MAC try the below steps as this worked for me:

1. User - Library - Prefrences - com.apple.iTunes.plist
2. Delete that com.apple.iTunes.plist
3. Restart the computer. It should recognise.

If your using a PC the steps are lengthy, and the steps are:

Restore I-Phone
1) Close all programs and restart computer.
2) Open iTunes and plug in powered off iPhone with direct USB connection.
3) If iTunes fails to connect to iPhone...continue to #4, if it does...restore.
4) Shut DOWN iTunes again.
5) Power OFF the iPhone & Disconnect from computer. (Power off two ways-one will work, hold home and sleep button until off or just hold sleep button until off)
6) Hold down Home button & connect to computer using direct connected USB cable (keep holding down the home button until iTunes sees it).
7) It should go into recovery mode and iTunes should recognise it.
8) If you want to recover to previous software version, Hold Alt/Shift and click restore in iTunes. Then select the old update version.

If the above steps doesnot work then try the below steps:

1. Turn the iPhone ON
2. CONNECT it to the computer with a DIRECT USB connection.
3. Make sure iTunes is open so you'll know when it enters DFU mode.
4. HOLD the Power/Sleep-Wake button AND the Home button for 10 seconds.
5. RELEASE only the Power/Sleep-Wake button and continue to hold the Home button.
6. WAIT until iTunes recognizes the phone in DFU Restore mode (in Windows a bubble pops up saying it recognized new hardware "DFU Mode" or something to that effect)
The last step may take SOME TIME, like, say, even 60 seconds or so.
The screen should be OFF (black), if you see the "Connect to iTunes" logo, START OVER.
It may take a few tries to do the steps just right, just reboot
(hold both Power/Sleep-Wake AND Home until the Apple logo appears and the phone turns back on) then try again.
7. Then restore the iphone

-Plug one end of the cord into your phone and the other in your computer
-Remove the cord in your computer, leaving the cord in the phone still plugged in
-Hold both the home button and on/off button on the phone
-Once the screen turns off, let go of the on/off button but continue holding the home button
-Plug in the other end of the cord in your computer while still holding the home button on the phone
-Once the apple logo appears, continue holding until you see the plug into itunes screen on your phone
-Click restore.

Hope this should resolve your issue :)

My iphone wont turn on

Have you tried doing a hard reset, Holding down both the home button on the bottom face of the phone and the on/off switch on the top left of the phone. Holding both those buttons down for about ten seconds will cause the iphone to restart and give you an apple symbol. when you get the apple symbol you can release those buttons.

Lock up after trying to install 3.0

There are a lot of suggested solutions on different forums for the 1604 (including on the Apple support site) - most blame a faulty / corrupted itunes and suggest reinstalling, or blame the USB port you're using and suggest either trying a different port (ideally at the back of your HD) or different computer. None of those things worked for me when it happened to me. My issue was that the 'preparing to restore' phase of restoration became looped and eventually it crashed citing error 1604.

However, there was a solution at: http://daggle.com/iphone-upgrade-fail-701 which did work for me.

For convenience:

1. Start the restore process (whatever way you can).

2. When it seems to be stuck in the loop (and possibly your iPhone just shows a blank screen) use CTRL+ALT+DEL and end task to kill the iTunes application.

3. Restart the restore process.

My iPhone.

First do the following : hold down the Power and Home buttons until you see the Apple logo, then release BOTH buttons, allow phone to boot, hold down the Power and Home until you see the Apple logo, then release BOTH buttons, your iPhone should now work right, if not, than do the following:

WARNING: restoring your iPhone cant take some time!

Follow these steps, yes they work I've had to do this twice now.

NOTE: You need to be plugged up to your computer for this to work

1. Hold down the POWER and HOME buttons untils your phone reboots.

2. Hold POWER button until the iPhone powers OFF

3. Hold POWER and HOME buttons, iPhone will now power on.

4. When you see the apple2.gif logo, release the POWER button but keep holding the home button.

5. iTunes should alert you now saying that it has found an iPhone in recovery mode, proceed to recover as normal now.

Also the iPhone screen may go white after doing this until restored, this is normal, it's not broken.
