No My Videos, My Music folder in XP Media Center

By drkravenbrow on Sep 21, 2009

When I originally purchased my pc, I had no use for media center. I deleted my videos, and my music folder related to media center. I still have my photos (which contains the sample art gallery pictures). Now I want to use media center and only the my pictures folder show up. I've tried adding the my videos folder in the shared document but when I use MC it doesn't show. only the my photos which I did not delete is still there. Any idea on how to get MC to see My Video's & My Music folder?

It only has the My Pictures. No My Videos or My Music
The folders are also there for admin, and each user.

there are multiple ways to fix this i am not quite sure where all the files go so i cant help you just make a file in media center but

media center is its own operating system and isnt actually a part of windows it just runs ontop or so ive been told the ingenious people of Microsoft decided that it should be separate lol

but you can fix this from media center by going into folder options or your options in media center

HI drkravenbrow,

It's as simple as going into my documents and adding a folder called My Videos. It needs to sit inside the my documents folder.

Good Luck,

- hey jjppmm29,

File Management in Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition is exactly the same as it is in other versions of the OS (home and Profesional) The default file manager is still windows explorer and the FS structure is essentially the same, The structure is basically this:

C:\ (root driver
+ Documents and settings
+profile user 1
+profile user 2
+profile all users

The user profile structure is as follows:

username
+Desktop
+My Documents
+My Pictures
+My Music
+My Videos
+ etc

That means that if you have created several users, and you navigate the FS, you will see several "my documents" (username's documents) The profile for all users has the name slightly differents an the folders are called "Shared Documents", "Shared Pictures", etc. Media center add a new folder in the "Shared Documents" folder called "Recorded TV", and this is where the TV shopws recorded in MC will be stored.

If you want to store files (pictures, msic etc) in one place so all users have access to it, then placed them in "Shared Documents". The other folders will still exist, just don't bother lokking at the,

as for changing the location of the My Documents, My Pictures, My Music - Go to where every you want them to be on the hard drive and produce a new folder for their new home. Then go to the Start menu and right click on "my documents", a nd select properties. In the properties, select the move button, it will bring up a file selection window, find the new file you created and click OK, select Ok on the my documents properties window to close it. When it closes, it will ask you if you want the contents of the
current My Documents moved to the new location, select yes and walla.

Now the My Documents, Music and Pictures selection in the Start menu will point to your new location and if you have others on you computer from failed attempts before, move all contents of those folders to the new My Documents and such, and delete all the old folders.

I can't tell you if they are really gone or not, but this will help you find them, and setup a new spot to keep them.

Thanks

Mark
