How to connect to net via wire and wifi

I'm assuming Windows is the OS. After disconnecting from one access method but before connecting with another (modem to wifi or network wire, etc. the IP address on the notebook will likely not be acceptable to the new connection) open a DOS or Command "Box" or "Window" (go to Start --> Run --> type the word "cmd" or "command" without quotes and then click ok. At the prompt, (without the quotes) type: "ipconfig /release" (You can see all the variables for the ipconfig command by typing "ipconfig /?")

Establish a new connection via hardwire network or wifi and allow the PC obtain a new IP address as normal. If unable to access internet sites, you can try to forcing a new IP address by opening the DOS box again and type "ipconfig /renew" This should cause the machine to get a new IP address. The "ipconfig" commands will probably not force a modem connection to get a new IP address (I haven't run modems for a long time - so I'm not familiar with their procedure of obtaining an IP address)

hi there,
if your computer has an ip address starting from then that is an invalid ip address... refer to computer vendor for another nic card.

Your ip address can be found by accessing the command prompt..
eg in XP
Start> Run> type in the run box "cmd" in the black dos window type in "ipconfig" press enter.

this will give out ip address, subnet mask and the defualt gateway.

in batch programming you can use your DOS command internal/extarnal or any program you can run.

You have to just write your commands in the sequence in which you want to run them, in a text format, and save them with a extension of .BAT. Thats all you have to do in a batch file program.

Westell 6100 problems

we had the same issue. Here is how we fixed it. I had the xbox 360 plugged directly into the westell 6100 modem via ethernet cable. the mtu test failed everytime. I was extremely frustrated and called microsoft and verizon (dsl) about 10 times each and they kept giving me the wrong solution. (get a new modem, get a new server, pay us money and we'll figure it out etc...) Here is what a man at microsoft told me to do and finally it worked. Power cycle your equipment (unplug modem and xbox 360 for 30 sec.) then, plug in modem first and wait until all lights are back on. Then plug in xbox and run test. In my case mtu failed again. I was then instructed to go to my dashboard and restore xbox to factory default which I did and rerun the test. This time everything FINALLY passed. We were in business. I then decided to try connecting through my airport extreme router. I power cycled again starting with the airport then the modem then the xbox and ran the test and unbelievable as it sounds it all passed and my son is now sitting happily on the couch playing a game online with his xbox 360. This took away days of my life to get this simple thing done. I was given codes to change and change back on the computer, phone calls to everyone and the solution was so simple when you finally reach a knowledgeable person. Hope this will help save someone else the time I spent!
