Question about Audio Players & Recorders

1 Answer

I am trying to power outside speakers (2 pairs of 8ohm) off a brand new Harman Kardon 2 channel receiver (HK3490). I was having problems with other receivers getting hot and believed it was happening because there was not enough power. After 15 minutes this receiver is now getting hot so it is something else completely. I have a pair of Polk Audio Atriums and a pair of OSD rock speakers that are controlled by a Niles WVC-100 volume control. Have checked all speaker wire pairs for continuity and there is no issue there - what else should I do? I've exhausted all the solutions that I know to try.

By-pass the external Volume control. It may not be "impedance matching" or it may have an internal issue. If it's located outside, it's probably corroded and creating a load on the receiver causing it to shut down. If you still have an issue beyond this , post a comment and I can help you troubleshoot further. Hope this helps

Sounds like the left channel has blown in your AVR 25II. If it was a faulty headphone jack it simply wouldn't send an output signal to the speakers.

Best way to hook up Bose 901 series VI to a Harman Kardon HK3490

According to the HK site, "Stereo pre-amp outputs let you connect the receiver to an external power amplifier." So it's easy. Connect the Bose equalizer in the pre-out / amp in loop.

I have a Harmon Kardon DPR 1001 and I added an additional set of rear speakers and on the OSD it is not recognizing the speakers

On page 19-20 you must tell it that it has surround back speakers (something other than NONE). They aren't just 'recognized'.

I don't know why you'd set the Peavey to 2 ohm to drive 8 ohm speakers??? My other thought is... I wonder if the phase is correct. try reversing one of the speaker wires Left or right side.

AVR 110 Harmon Kaedon

Looking in the manual (link below) I see that this receiver uses 8ohm speakers, check that your speakers are 8 ohms or more. I think that connecting 2 sets of speakers to the same output is the problem as when you connect speakers in parallel (i.e. just twisting both pairs of wires together) you effectively half the impedance. So if 2 sets of speakers of 8ohms are connected this way the result will be 4ohms which is too low and will cause the unit to go into standby. Try removing the additional front speakers & see if the fault persists. If it does then it is likely a fault in the wiring. http://www.harmankardon.com/product_support/support_detail.aspx?Region=USA&Country=US&Language=ENG&cat=&prod=AVR%20110&sjump=om&#active
