Hi,

There are two techniques:
The first involves the adjusting barrels and lock nuts on the brake levers, but i prefer to loosen the cable in the brake arm and pull it tighter and reclamp it there.

Hope this helps, feel free to email for further help,
matt

How do I adjust the brakes on my bicycle?

Re position the braking assembly so the stationary pad is just about to touch the rim and tighten. Then with the adjustment adjust the pad that moves so that it applies appropriate braking force when you squeeze the hand brake.

There is an adjusting screw on the handle and one at the bottom of the brake cable. Squeeze the brakes by hand tight on the tire and adjust the scews.

Back hand brake rubs on pads cannot adjust basic hand brakes

If you can't adjust your brake position by using the adjustment screws you can loosen the wheel bolts and physically change the tires position to make it fit within the brakes. If that doesn't work take you bicycle into your local bike shop and have them check your rim alignment.

Front brake pads are not resting on the rim

Getting hand-brakes adjusted correctly is often a challenge, but they are adjustable with the right size wrenches. On the other hand, a front hand-brake on a child's one-speed bike is not necessary and is only on the bike to give it sales-appeal. If this is a one-speed bike, then it has a coaster brake (operated by pushing the pedals backwards). Actually the coaster brake is much safer than a front hand brake anyway. If the child applies the coaster brake too heavily, they will just skid. If they apply the front brake too heavily, they will go over the handlebars. If the hand brake is not interfering with the front wheel and is just not very effective, I would just leave it as-is. If the brakes rub on the tire, you should adjust them so they don't rub the tire.

How do i adjust the brakes on a schwinn stingray low rider bicycle? the front brakes dont grip the wheel enough to stop and the rear is rubbing on one side. thanks

Hi,

Let us start with the rear. The brake arms will have a small screw located on them near the pivot. You can screw these in to adjust the relation of the pad to the rim. You can also (if that didn't take care of it) remove the brake arm and move the spring's pin to the next hole to make sure it properly clears itself.
The front can be tightened on the brake levers with the adjustment barrel, or, if that is already fully turned out, turn it all the way back in and release the cable at the brake itself and retighten it when you have adequately adjusted the brake there.
Check out Parktool.com's repair help page (located at the top right hand of their homepage) for excellent detailed and illustrated help in bike maintenance.

Hope this helps a little,
matt

Hand brake adjustment for schwinn point beach crusier

The brake that you are adjusting go to that wheel. On that wheel you will see a brake pad on each side of the wheel. To adjust tighter you squeese these two brake pads together, you will see a wire, there will be a nut that they wire goes through, loosen the nut and squeese brake pads together, then tighten nut back up. your hand brake will now be adjusted.
