Question about Linksys WRT160N Wireless Router

1 Answer

I had a problem last week of getting connected with my lynsk n-router. You told me to make sure the ip address was set for auto rec. How do you do that? To better explain the problem....I can get on for about 20min to an hour and then I am booted off...and when I go to reconnect it says 1 of a few things. One time it said bad passphrase or key phrase...but I know it is right. Then it said to make sure the network settings on the computer will allow the network that I am using...not sure how to do that. But again, when I reset the router and either use the disk set up or do the manual set up through the linksys website....I get the same result...works for a short time. I even had dell here to make sure it wasnt the wireless card inside. They replaced it and said to get a new wireless router. I did and still having same problem. SO I guess I want to try to make sure the ip address is set for auto receive with the one the router provides. how? Thanks!

These routers are crazy! I bought one and have found that the security is way too much for a little router ; )

Try this! Reset the router from the back. There is a little button that you hold down for approx. 15 seconds. Reinstall the router without any security passwords. Use it and see if you get the same results. If not, then you need to choose security that is compatible not the one that is the highest security settings. The one you want to choose is WEP security not WAP. WEP is for a home network and is compatible with all wireless devices. WAP is more for a small business enviroment and has less support of older cards; this one is the new G wireless.

Be sure and run a complete virus and malware scan to make sure your conncetion is not hijacked.

How do i format my DSL2730B modem/router using a mac?

same way ...type the router address into the browser ..like this: http;??192.168.1.0 ...or whatever the router address is ...(IP) after that a page for log into setting will appear ...and to get there usually have to use the word admin for both ..user and password..Once inside the settings ..just set the router internet connection same way you set the internet directly on your computer ..if you have a modem it will be the automatic assign an ip address..in the tcp/ip protocol ..and if you have a static IP ..choose static..and manually set the IP ..sub-net mask ..default gateway ..and the dns servers just like the one provided by the ISP ..(internet service provider)
this way you set the connection to the internet of the wlan port ...
The computers will plug into the ports..and will have an automatic assign Ip address (obtain an IP address auto...set on the lan card tcp/ip protocol )..except on the manuallly configuration the IP address will be one in the range set in the router..usually in order of the p[orts..with the last digit of the IP ...in uprising order...ex..the first port IP will be 192.168.1.1 if the ip is the one I used for example earlier...and so on ...xxxxxxxxxx2 ;xxxxxxxxxx 3
the thing to remember in case you make the settings manually for the protocol ..is that the subnet mask will be 255.255.255.0 and the default gateway will be the router's IP address ..and the dns server will be the one from the provider..or if you have a modem too..will be the modem's IP address

My Zonet ZSR4134WE Wireless-N router doesn't connect to live. I've checked the MTU setting and everything. It works perfectly, until it gets to the "Xbox Live" part of the test, then it fails. Please help.

you need to open the ports on your router for xbox ports are TCP 88 UDP 88 UDP 3074 TCP 3074 UDP 53 TCP 53
first connect the xbox to the network and get the ip address (like 192.168.x.x) and then use the computer and login to router setup page and under firewall open these ports for the ip address of xbox . If you find a DMZ there , then enable it for XBOX ip address and reboot the router. ** imp: try to make a static ip address on xbox so when you restart the xbox teh ip address should not change -
to check what is the ip address provided from you router :- go command prompt (start ->run- > type cmd and hit enter) a black screen(command) type ipconfig you will find ip address of computer , so you can set the ip address of xbox like that -but just make the last number different (like ip address on computer 192.168.2.5 then make ip address of xbox to 192.168.2.6) perform this will help .. its all about the ports but be sure with ip address

My computer settings do not match the router settings...not sure how to change

The important thing is that the IP Address is the same 3 Octets and the fourth Octet is unique. I.E. The Three Octets are "192.168.1.?". The fourth Octet is something like "?.?.?.100" With this information are the two settings similar enough to connect¿ If you still want to change the settings go to Control Panel / Network Connections / Local area Connection / IP settings, Properties and Use this IP Address. The First Three Octets Must be the same as the Routers First Three Octets. The last Octet must be within "0" and "255" cannot be those Two numbers nor the IP Address of the Router and the "Subnet Mask" will auto fill in for you but will be "255.255.255.0". The "Default Gateway" and the "DNS Server" will be the same IP address of the Gateway unless you already have a specific DNS server preference. Good Luck

I cannot get 192.168.0.1 to go into my router in order that i might change some settings d-link di-524

Plug a ethernet cable from your laptop directly into one of the ports on the dlink. DO NOT PLUG INTO UP-LINK PORT. Change the IP address on your laptop to an ip in the same sub-net (192.168.0.10,255.255.255.0) Then open a browser and type http://192.168.0.1. This should get you in.

Wireless set up problem - no gateway ip or limited connectivity

Connect using Lan Cable
be sure to enable java on your Browser.
Use ONLY IE: some router refuse other browser.
SET your PC on a static IP address on SAME subnet as your router (but of course different IP).
If subnet concept is NOT clear to just just ask here.
When connected with router (on Lan Cable) check every setting (WPA-PSK) TKIP key, Broadcast / Channel etc.
You can also disable every WLAN protection and restore it later.
Activate WLAN connection WHEN you are STILL connected.
Last but not least: SET your DNS IP address = your gateway IP (router)

VPN passthrough

What are the settings that you have for your netgear router? Its going to tunnel, right? Try this solutions and see it will work.

1. Access the set-up page of the router, from a browser, type 192.168.1.1
2. Go to VPN tab and select IP SEC VPN
3. Local Security Group, set it to subnet and input the Network Address of the router (LAN IP - 192.168.1.0)
4. Remote Security Group, set it to subnet and input the Network Address of the netgear router (LAN IP, for example - 192.168.2.0)
5. Remote Secure Group, set it to IP only, WAN IP address of the netgear router
6. For Key Managemnt, just make sure that all settings are identical with the netgear router
7. Last go to Advanced Settings and make sure that group settings are identical to the netgear router

Hope it works for you

Printer will not print

1. Printing from one computer directly to the printer requires a crossover cable. The reason they are telling you to use a router is so you can use a standard wired cable. You can print direct to the printer from the ethernet port via a crossover cable.
2. On the settings. First, go into the nework settings and turn OFF the auto dhcp. What it is most likely doing it switching the IP address on you. Set that to manual or static, then enter the appropriate IP address.
Set that IP address in the driver under the port configuration.
So in order, can the router unless you are going to run your network through it also. And use a crossover cable to run directly from the conputer to the printer. Then turn off the AUTO on the IP address settings and make the IP address static.
Then print out a configuration page to confirm the IP settings then set the printer up from there.
The crossover cable for direct computer to printer is te key.
Any other questions ask away.

Nintendo Wi-fi Connector Problem

nintendo ds should work with most routers it's just the set thats a problem, once the wifi game is in go to wifi connection one settings, then where it says auto obtain ip address click no, then edit, then use an ip address that is the next digit up from your pc or your router eg, if your routers ip address is 192.168.2.1( this is what you would type in your internet browser to get into the router settings), the next digit used by a pc would be 192.168.2.2, so use 192.168.2.3 or above incase you have more than one pc. Next is the subnet mask which should again be as the routers subnet mask which will more than likely be 255.255.255.0., press edit and enter that number Next is the gateway setting, press edit, this is the same number of your routers own ip address as mentioned earlier this is the ip address you type to get into the router eg 192.168.2.1. next is auto obtain DNS, again click no, then on the primary address click edit and again enter your routers own ip address. next is secondary DNS, again click edit and again enter your routers ip address, then click save settings. You should now be able to connect to your router and the wifi connection at nintendo server.

Problem connecting to the net

You router may be set to be DHCP enabled so that it allocates the ip addresses automatically to each pc, so check that the pc's network card with connection problems is set in the properties on the TCP/IP line is set to obtain an ip address automatically. You can also try, Start>run then type ipconfig /flushdns to clear the pc ip address and dns. and restart pc. Lastly if you pc is both network cabled and wireless, ensure one or the other is dissabled as this can confuse the ip adress alocation.

Won't refresh IP address?

Clicking repair normally sets incorrect ip addreses to your router requirements. Firstly, dissable your wireless connection, as your pc will still be trying to connect to the router, then try connecting again, your router should automatically assign an IP address to your pc. If that fails get into your routers settings (eg type in something similair to 192.168.x.x) x's being the numbers required for your router(see your manual); and have a look at the ip addresses that the router assigns to your pc's, probably on the 192.154.x.x region and write them down if neccassary. Then open up your wired cards properties(control panel- network connections- local area connection icon) and click on 'internet protocol tcp/ip', then properties and then click use the following IP address and type in the same numbers as your router range except for the last figure as this must not be same. You must also make sure the Subnet Mask numbers are the same as this is the route your connection follows to the router. Sorry it's a bit long winded but theres no shorter way round it.
