Question about Computers & Internet
I have the exact problem. This is my second Seagate Showcase Drive. The first one, worked fine for a few months, and then I started getting the message on my DVR that said ''There is no multimedia device connected to the USB port''.
I reset the receiver many times, unplugged the Seagate drive and re-connected it to both the front and rear USB port with no success. I also swapped cables with a known working USB cable.
I called tech support for both Dish network and Seagate. I was back and forth with each because neither could diagnose the problem.
I eventually got Seagate to RMA the drive and I got a replacement. The new drive has worked fine for a few months and just in the last couple weeks, intermittantly, the DVR will not recognize the drive.
I also have a 500GB external drive from another manufacturer that works fine, and my thumb drive works fine.
I hope someone finds a solution for this, (other than running over the seagate drive with my car).
Same problem here, 722 not recognizing Seagate Showcase, been going on for months now. Per Seagate advice, I replaced Dish Network Receiver, no help, finally pressed Seagate after all their "troubleshooting" (which was no help at all) & they said to return Showcase & they'd send out another. Well they didn't send me back a Showcase, but (2) 1TB external computer hard drives. Now my 722 recognizes this computer drive is there, but: 1) you can't delete anything from it once it's on there, you hit "delete" & it doesn't delete, it's still there. Contacted Seagate about this & they said to delete programs you'd have to "wipe" the entire thing by unhooking it from your DVR, plugging it in to your computer, then "wiping" (erasing) the entire contents of the drive. WHAT???? I bought the drive to store some things I'd like to keep until I have time to watch them, store other things that I'd like to keep permanently. I don't want to "wipe" the contents of the entire drive. Good grief, that isn't how this was meant to work, you are supposed to be able to add/delete any program you wish, WITHOUT having to "wipe" the entire contents of the drive by hooking it to your computer. 2) you can't "resume" something after you've stopped watching it say, halfway thru, you have to manually find where you were by skipping or fast-forwarding, 3) if you pause program you're watching, it won't restart by hitting "play", you have to hit "skip fwd" & then it will skip forward & resume playing, 4) if you hit "stop" while watching a program, it just "freeze frames" & then won't take you back to your menu (like it should), it just freezes, & to "unfreeze" it you have to again hit "skip fwd", doesn't respond to anything else 5) sometimes it recognizes the programs you have recorded, other times it does not, thus your programs you've recorded you know are there, & the DVR is recognizing the unit itself, but unless you pull out the USB, wait, then plug back in the USB, it doesn't show you your recordings listing at all. I have no contacted Seagate & have now (I feel) exhausted all of my options. I am DONE, stick me with a fork. I asked Seagate why they didn't send me another Showcase, which is what they should have done, but they replied "we're not sending any more of those out right now". Hmmmm, sounds like I'm not the only one having this problem, huh? Why else would they not send me out a replacement of my original purchased product, but try to replace it with (2) computer drives instead, which is not what I purchased, I purchased a Seagate Showcase, because it is the ONLY drive recommended by Dish Network to be "the" drive exclusively meant to work w/Dish Network....ha ha. Somebody needs to go back to the drawing board here, Dish Network blames Seagate, Seagate blames Dish Network. I'm so done with all this that I don't even care any more who's problem it really is, or if the problem is a combination of both companies products perhaps, all I know is I'm finished. I am returning both of these computer drives, and am FINALLY supposed to be getting my money back. Hallelujah, Amen, I'm getting off of this roller coaster & won't be riding again anytime soon.

Check out the link below for more information. You may wish to RMA your current drive as well. My 1tb Showcase just took a dump in the same fashion. According to Seagate support, the problem has been fixed with a new firmware revision. Guess I'll know a few months after my replacement arrives... -)

I had the same problem. Just got off the phone with Seagate and they are sending me 2 each 1 TB external hard drives as a replacement for my Showcase. They said they have not had any problems reported with the 1 TB external hard drives they are sending me. They are basicly sending one as a replacement and the other as a "here's an extra free hard drive for your problems" or it could be that they have to because the replacement drives are less expensive. I paid the $21.64 for the advance return so that they send the new driver first with the pre paid shipping of the return drive. I am hoping there will be a way using my PC to transfer what I have recorded on the Showcase to the new drives.
I will post my results after I receive the new drives.

My Showcase also stopped working unexpectedly after about 8 months. The problem being the DVR was unable to recognize when the USB Showcase drive was plugged in. Even though it is still under warranty I didn't want to loose the 180+ movies I had recorded on it. So I purchased an Airbox 3.5" external HD enclosure and transferred the Seagate HD to it. As soon as I plugged the Airbox into the DVR, it immediately recognized it and I now have access to all my movies.
