The surround sound will automatically turn on whenever the box detects Dolby/DTS/etc. I don't have the remote either, but I sort of tricked the unit into staying in Multichannel Decoding mode by using my TV's digital coax output, plugged into the DVD digital input of the HT400. Similarly, most DVD players will have a digital coaxial output. When the HT400 sees a digital input, it should switch over to Multichannel Decoding. If it doesn't immediatly work, cycle through the inputs, and usually mine will pick it up the second time around. That, or buy the above mentioned remote, because you'll never find a universal remote with the codes pre-programmed in.
