The answer is NOT satisfying, as the tape tab is in the correct position (i.e. in record mode). The camera keeps on showing the message: "tape is locked - check the tab". Camera cannot be switched to stb position !!

The Sony camera indicates: "tape is locked - check tab", but the tape tab is on position 'record'. So, it must be some other artifact! The camera canNOT be switched to 'standby' position.

Thank you for this very useful information ! However, where do we find the little arm, about which you are talking and how does it look like ??

Hi there, Guy,

1. Take the tape out of your sony camcorder.
2. From the tape cartridge, somewhere on the top corner, look for a little tab which is most likely to be open. If that is open, it wont let you record, thus the error.
3. Move or slide the tab to close the position.
4. Gently put the tape back inside your camcorder and try again.

Goodluck and hope this helps.

This generally indicates that the tape you are using is write protected by a small tab on the tape. To unlock it simply slide it to the unlocked position. If this does not work then try another tape first and if this still does not work then take a look inside the tape compartment of the camera to ensure that the is no debris covering the small arm that jumps into the tab slot on the tape when it is inser5ted. It is fairly common for this to happen. Any debris should be carefully removed with a cotton bud that has been wetted with isopropyl alcohol - do not use surgical spirit as this contains oil and will leave an undesirable residue.

Please check Record Tab at right corner at rear side of tape either it is Video-8 or MiniDV tape and set it to Rec position as currently it is on Save position and camera senses it and tells you " tape is locked"

Below image of tape will help you to locate record tab.
Thanks.

There was no intimation of tab set on record position in first question so I started with basic but got assistance rejection. Now I get very rare chances to post further info due to website system.
I will try to help you out if you can provide me model number of your Sony camcorder.
    Thanks.

When i try to start shooting a video,a message is displayed on the screen saying:the tape is locked-check the tab.

The message is telling you that the tape you are using has had the write protect tab removed. This is done to keep from taping over something you want to keep. Try onother tape.
If you know this is not the peoblem (like a new tape) you could hav a problem with the camera
