Question about Whirlpool LER4634J Electric Dryer

My dryer won't start, but I think the cycle button won't engage.

My electric dryer is about 9 years old. It won't start when start button is pushed. But I think the problem is in the cycle selection button. For a few weeks I have had to toggle it in and out before I push the start button to get it to start tumbling. I definitely think it's the cycle selection button.

My husband checked. It is not the fuse. The wiring is not burnt. We do hear a ticking sound when the selection button is turned but it still won't start.

THERE IS A SWITCH THAT IS LOCATED ON THE OPPOSITE SIDE OF THE DOOR. SOME OF THESE SWITCHES ARE OF THE PLUNGER TYPE. TRY PUSHING THE PLUNGER IN WHILE STARTING THE DRYER, MAKING SURE THAT NOTHING IS IN THE PATH OF THE ROTATING DRUM. IF THE DRYER STARTS, THEN EITHER ADJUST OR REPLACE THE PLUNGER SWITCH. THANKS FOR USING FIX-YA. PLEASE KEEP ME POSTED. GOOD LUCK

Hi

Thanks for using FixYa. The issue might have happened due to a blown fuse or burnt wiring/components on the control board. You'll need to check and replace the fuse and replace it.
Blows fuses or trips circuit breaker —ELECTRIC Models:
• The amperage readings are at 240 volts. One line will be 24 amps and the other line will be 21 amps. The neutral line will be at 3 amps. If the above amperages are not present, then the house wiring, fuse box or circuit breaker should be suspect.
• Shorted heating element to housing.
• Incorrect wiring or a wire shorting to ground.
• Drive motor winding shorting to ground.

    Hi

Thanks for using FixYa. I think i was helping you, don't know why you rated my solution as "not related". Please check part #5 thermal Fuse--

A thermal fuse is a heat-sensitive fuse attached to your dryer's exhaust duct (in most models) that is designed to blow if the dryer overheats. A blown fuse would cause your dryer to not heat, or to not work at all. Open up your dryer's cabinet and locate its thermal fuse. Test the component. If it has blown, replace it.

Your dryer may not be receiving adequate voltage to start. Make sure your dryer is plugged in. Also, check the circuit breaker panel to make sure all the circuit breakers are in the correct positions. Or check to make sure no fuses in the fuse panel are blown. Try plugging something else into the same outlet. If it won't work either, then there is likely something wrong with the power outlet. Any of these could be the reason power is not getting to your dryer. Also, refrain from using an extension cord to plug your dryer in.

A defective dryer thermostat could be what is preventing your dryer from starting. Open up your dryer's cabinet. Test each of your dryer's thermostats. Replace any that have become defective.

A burned out motor could be what is keeping your dryer from starting. Test your dryer's motor and if it is defective, replace it. You will have to open your dryer in order to gain access to its motor.

Check if the ventilation ducting to ensure that it is not kinked or clogged. Poor air flow is the number one cause of dryer failures. Not to mention it can cause fires due to lint backing up inside the dryer. This could be the "electrical" smell you've experienced. If trapped lint is ending up on the heating element it will smolder and burn.

Please do change the rating for the solution and revert for further assistance.

    Thanks

My dryer makes a buzzing noise when I push the start button

My Hotpoint dryer is seven years old and did the exact same thing. When I got over the anger and the thought of spending 4 or 5 hundred dollars to replace it I started messing with it. I finally decided that since it buzzed when I tried to start it there was current there. The only other thing it could be was the drying cycle knob.
I held the start knob and let it buzz while I slowly turned the dryer cycle knob to the right. As I turned through each cycle it would hit "off" and the buzzing would stop and then resume as I moved past the "off " setting. On the third trip around the dryer "started" and has been working since. Maybe something got out of kilter. Apparently the problem was in the knob that controls the drying cycles.

Dryer motor

if the motor buzzes when you push start then it is a bad motor.as long as the drum turns freely by hand.

Whirlpool Electric Dryer Won't Start

Your dryer has a non-resettable "thermal safety fuse" part number 3392519 which stops the machine dead when the temperature near the heater gets too high. Typically a restricted vent system causes this so you definitely want to check that before replacing it. A failed control thermostat can also cause this so check the operating temp too.
