Prior to upgrading to XP SP2, the screen orientation on the HP Compaq tc1100
Tablet PC would switch between "landscape" and "portrait" with no problem.
Since upgrading to SP2, the orientation remains at "landscape" and the O.S.
returns an error ("The setting you requesting cannot be supported. Open
Display in Control Panel, adjust the settings, and then try to change
orientation again.") when trying to switch to "portrait" orientation. When
this problem was posed to Microsoft Support previously, the suggested remedy
was to download and install the most up-to-date driver for the graphics
adapter[NVIDIA GeForce4 420 Go 32M]. This did not resolve the issue.
What should I do now?

I have a similar problem. Before when I would lay the screen flat it would automatically adjust to portrait, which was nice - yet after going through a load of windows updates it's stopped automatically detecting this... If there any other 3rd party software I can download that will detect how I rotate the screen to fix this problem? As it is I rotate the screen via use of hotkeys now.

driver update. It would seem that we would be seeing a whole lot of
reports, if this was a real problem with XP and Service Pack 2.
Which graphics setup is on your machine? You might possibly check THAT
manufacturer's web site to see if they have a more recent driver than Compaq
has, if that is actually the issue.

supportive. I have even searched their knowledge base and this problem has
come up more than one time. It appear that if I want to stop having my
tablet crash when I change resolutions or attempt to change screen
orientation, then I am going to have to uninstall sp2. That's a shame!

who you speak with, their name, time of day, etc., and ask for a trouble
ticket or case number. Ask to speak to a supervisor or next level support.
There are plenty of Compaq owners running XP SP2 without the issue.
Take a look in Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Event Viewer, tapping both
Application and System in the left pane to reveal error messages in the
right pane. Those yellow triangles with exclamation points or red circles
with white X's came be right-clicked with a selection of Properties to
reveal a portion of the error message. This could lead to a solution.
Does this situation present itself whether you're turning the screen or not?
I.E., does the automatic function cause this to happen or can you create it
by simply selecting a different orientation? You may just have a connection
loose somewhere, which Compaq should be taking a strong look into the
function.

tab are missing? What happens when you tap the Change button? I would make
sure to install/reinstall all drivers available from Compaq since September,
2004. They're updates for XP SP2:
