"Critical Battery Error" even with not battery in laptop

My stepdad's ThinkPad T20 is giving a "Critical Battery Error" and then shutting right back down, when start up. It even does this when the battery is removed and the laptop is plugged in. Any idea's what could be causing this?

No, I don't. The Power supply for my laptop which is an Acer Aspire has a smaller end on it. It will not work. I cannot tell if it is keeping the correct date and time, because it will not load at all. When I push the power button to start it up, the first thing that comes up is a black screen that says "critical battery error" It then instantly shuts back down again.

Thank you, I hadn't even thought of the cmos battery. It might take me a little while to get one, busy with the holidays and all. I'll post back and let you know if that fixes it.

Hi,
Do you have another power supply to use?
Also, is it keeping correct time and date?

    Hi,

I'm pretty sure the "190" "critical battery error" is not the main battery, but the cmos battery.

T20 cmos batteries are not prone to be weak, however, they are getting along in years, so replacing it is certainly a very inexpensive investment for a pretty fair laptop.

If you have trouble with IBMs service manual for the T20, just post back and I'll give directions.

    Good luck

0190: critical low battery error

When old IBM Think Pads fail to boot it is usually because the CMOS battery has worn out. It is very easy and inexpensive to replace. Youtube has numerous videos showing how to replace it e.g. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ZI-8Q2j-zQ

How do I remove the backup battery from my Thinkpad 2647 T23? I'm trying to remove the POP.

ThinkPad T23 2647

Manufacturer - IBM
Series - T Series
Subseries - ThinkPad T23
Machine Type - 2647

1) Remove ALL power. Remove the AC adapter (Charger), and Battery.

2) Battery removed, Battery Compartment facing you.

Look at the right inside edge. There is a small plastic cover inside the Battery Compartment.

Remove the one Philips head screw, then remove the cover.
Backup battery, CMOS battery, or RTC battery. SAME/same.
(Real Time Clock battery)

Also, here is the Service Manual,

http://www.tim.id.au/blog/tims-laptop-service-manuals/#toc-ibmlenovo

Drop down to the 8th line. (ThinkPad T20. T20 in blue)
Scroll over, and left-click right on - T23

This is a PDF file. The computer you are using now has Adobe Reader on it, which uses PDF files.

After you click on the file name, (T23), it may take up to 30 seconds, before the first page comes up.

Start on Page 66. Backup Battery is on Page 67.
OR,
In the Bookmarks menu to the left, click on -

1) The + sign to the left of -
ThinkPad T20, T21, T22, and T23 series.

2) The + sign to the left of -
Removing and replacing an FRU.
(Field Replaceable Unit)

3) Left-click right on - 1010 Battery Pack, and 1020 Backup Battery.

Nice to have when you are going to clean that puppy out.
(BUY, and wear an ESD wrist strap. Connect it's alligator clip to a good ground source.
Average price is around $3 to $6)

Also nice to have to upgrade the Processor, and a myriad of other things.

Ibm think pad r32 0196 critical low-battery error will boot up then turns it self of

Fail safe in the battery has engaged. See if the computer will start without the battery, using just the power supply. If you can get it started then put the battery in and see if it will charge or reset the fail safe. Give it about an hour, then shut it completely down and restart it with the battery in. If it won't start at this point, then you will need a new battery. Also change the CMOS battery inside the computer

Change the CMOS battery

Ibm a31 0190 erroe

Error 0190 means you need to charge your battery. Either your battery is not charging properlty or your charger is not working anymore. If the computer works while plugged in and gives no error then it would be the battery that needs replacing. If the battery is a few years old then you may want to order a replacement. The Thinkpad A31 uses the ThinkPad Ultrabay 2000 Li-Ion Battery. You can purchase a replacement battery from this website:

http://shop.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/controller/e/web/LenovoPortal/en_US/catalog.workflow:item.detail?GroupID=38&Code=02K6646&current-category-id=4364BD0F20B94413B5AD6E684D2848E9

If the laptop doesn't work while plugged in and you dont get any lights on the battery or power indicator on the front of the laptop then you may need a replacement. Depending on which region you are in you will need a different A/C adapter. You can find a list of different A/C adapters here. The A31 uses the 72 watt power adapters on this page:

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=MIGR-4PJRRG#72watt

I hope this helps.

Critical low battery error 190

This sounds like a fail safe in the battery has engaged. See if the machine will start without the battery, on the supply only. If you can get it started then put the battery in and see if it will charge or reset the fail safe. Give it about an hour, then shut it completely down and restart it with the battery in. If it won't start at this point, then you will need a new battery.
