I assume you are referring to the deck bearings. The easiest way to replace the blade drive bearings is to remove the deck from the mower. You can then easily remove the blades, clean the deck and be able to easily get to the bolts holding the bearings and pulleys in place. This is normally a straightforward repair and can be accomplished with common hand tools. You will need to purchase the parts from the dealer who sells the mower. Replace all 3 set of bearings. On a 3 year old mower ask yourself why the bearings failed. Are you washing under the deck when the bearings housings are hot? That will cause premature failure. Are you greasing the bearings regularly?

Mower deck whining. Louder at idle speed

Pull your deck, check your spindles for bearings start to go bad.
Check your idler pulleys and oil them a little.

The tentioner spring may be getting week.If same belt drives the reaend and the deck blades you may have a deck spindle bearing going bad and locking up.

Mower blades froze up

Have you greased the bearings on the mower deck recently? Is there something jamming the blades?

Remove the deck and see if you can move the blades by hand. If you insist on not removing the deck to do this ... make sure the belt that drives the deck is not on the drive shaft of the motor to prevent accidental starting of the motor and instant mangling of your hand. If you can move all the blades, look for a faulty or worn out pulley on the deck. If the blades are frozen in their bearings, get replacement towers at your John Deere dealer or from a FixYa.com advertiser. If one is faulty or rusted ... replace them all ... as they are probably at or near the same condition. Do this job one time and do it correctly.

Craftsman riding mower noise when blades engaged

With blades on and engine off reach under and wiggle each blade up and down. If you have excess play you will need bearings.

Where or how do i check for the bearings going out on my poulan riding mower. is it hard? is it expensive? can it be done at home or do i need special part?

Usually, the first indication the bearings are going out the the noise it starts make. Sorta like your bearings have turned to gravel. You can reach under the deck and see it you can move the end of the blades up and down, not the way they normally turn, but up and down. If there's play there, you need bearings. Not a real hard job, but depends on the tools you have. Check out your deck and if you want to do it yourself, get back to me. Dwain

BLADE DRIVE BELT ADJUSTMENT

Well, most riding mowers have a "pully idler", meaning once you have the belt on there (and it is the RIGHT size), the idler automatically gives the belt tension when you engage it (in fact, the idler pully is what IS engaged when you engage the belly mower).

Couple things to check (super simple):

The Belt. Look to see if she is wore smooth out.
Sometimes....they WILL stretch on you, instead of busting/coming apart, and give you noise (when she is engaged, but wore out enough to flop around a little)

The Deck Blade Bearings. Straight away, that is what it sounds like, or bent blades.

Check your Blade Bearings (super simple):
1. Pick up your deck to the highest high setting (mower off, just sitting).
2. Reach under, and grab your mower blade (do this for both sides), and TILT your blade UP (meaning, don't LIFT the blade straight up).
Seriously, jiggle it at a TILT. If you feel some slack in the bearing, the bearing IS shot. Straight up and down is most of the time OK, IF it is VERY little play on your blade bearings. As you do it, look at your belt pulley directly on top, if you see that pully bobbing....

However, if you grab one side of the blade only, then tilt the blade up, and she moves.....
Bearings need replaced, both the upper AND lower bearings PER blade.

They are not hard to replace, and not expensive either! (Though unfortunately, most are "sealed" junk nowadays!)

Bad Bearings show up (make themselves known) in only a few ways: Tons of Noise (grinding, squealing) & Vibration.

Go check them thar Bearings!
