crankcase breather plate has about 25% of fibre disc broken away and some small piece of very fine spring laying inside valve spring compartment. Do these breather plate assemblies fail regularly? Is worn engine "blowby" likely cause of this damage?
I think this is at least 25 years old.

Are you talking about the crankcase breather or the air breather/filter on the carburetor

If it is, as you say, a 1979 or so engine, the crankcase breather could have well worn out. This will cause the oil burning and blowby. Replace the breather as an assembly, they are cheap and available from any Briggs dealer. The leaks are probably loose bolts and/or bad gaskets. You will just have to figure where the leaks are and replace the appropriate gasket. The breather could also cause the leaks so do the breather first then run it for a while to see if it is still leaking

Engine seems to run fine as long as the plug is not fouled however it smokes and leaks oil from the fuel pump. It seems as though there is too much crank case pressure

oil from the fuel pump may indicate a failure of the diaphragm of the fuel pump and petrol is getting into the sump
that will raise the oil level to a point where the oil ring can longer control the oil getting to the top of the piston
it is possible that the sump breather hose is blocked or if it has a small pvc valve that that is blocked

My son may have ran over some damp grass with our Briggs and Stratton 500 series, 158 cc lawn mower and now it smokes and leaks oil out of the exhaust, how do I fix this?

if he tipped it on its side to clean the grass off the oil will burn off but check the oil level he just tipped it so the crank case drained into the cylinder also check the air filter that might have got oil soaked as well

Breather blowing oil out

If there is a check valve in the breather it may be stuck. However this is usually indicative of broken rings or burned pistons(piston) . Compression bypasses rings and pistons causing excess crankcase pressure and oil spillage.

Briggs & Stratton Vertical OHV Engine 18 hp blowing white smoke engine run great but a lot of smoke and also have oil being spit out of the black hose that come from engine to the carb.

Check your oil.

If it is overfilled, milky, or smells like gas. Your going to need to change that ASAP. It sounds like the float has stuck in the past or is still sticking, and it has flooded the crankcase with gas, which has mixed with the oil. And because it is overfilled it comes through the breather hose into the carb. This also explains the smoke most probably because the oil is spewing in the carb through the breather and being burned.

I have briggs and stratton 5.5 hp motor model 12h702.And oil comes out of the breather.Could it be the valve guides or the rings. It smokes out of the breather hose and exhust a little.

It sounds more like badly worn rings and/or a glazed bore. Provided bore is not badly worn, a bore hone and a new set of rings should solve the problem. While yuo have the engine apart, a valve grind and check/adjust of the valve clearances wouldn't hurt.

What kind of oil does the 22 hp briggs stratton take

from briggs site:
For optimum performance, you should change the oil in your small engine after the first five hours of use and then annually, or every 50 hours of use (whichever comes first).
  • Use Briggs & Stratton SAE 30W Oil above 40°F (4°C) for all of our engines.
  • Check oil level regularly.
  • Air-cooled engines burn about an ounce of oil per cylinder, per hour.
  • Fill to mark on dipstick. DO NOT OVERFILL.

I have a briggs and stratton ride on lawn mower 14hp model 287707. engine pumping oil through breather into carburettor when running, its working but burning oil.

The float is getting stuck open which will cause the engine/sump to fill with oil and thats why you see oil comming out carby/air filter clean ya plug drain your sump turn motor over with plug out a few time to clean out check float/needle and seat in carby refil oil clean ya spark plug and off you go it will blow heaps of white smoke don't worry it is just buring th oil out if the exhaust/engine hope this helps some one

Oil in air breather

sounds like you have too much oil in the engine (should normally be around 500-600ml when there is too much oil, it gets past the piston rings and pushes it through to the head.
