How do i use ampersand on keyboard mx 800

Standard US ANSI layout has the ampersand at <shift> <7 key> on the main keyboard. If your keyboard doesn't have a graphic for ampersand ( & ) on one of the keys you can look into your word processor or OS settings for "Keyboard map" .

Or, like a lot of people do with international symbols, cheat with a cut & paste from a document.

When I try to type the ampersand ( @ ) I get the quotation ( " ) sign instead

PROBLEM: Some keyboard characters type incorrectly and are swapped. Most notably the Ampersand - @ and the Quote sign - "

RESOLUTION: The wrong country selection for the keyboard layout has been selected. An ENGLISH - UK keyboard with an ENGLISH - USA keyboard type selected or the reverse.

Go to CONTROL PANEL, REGIONAL AND LANGUAGE settings and select the correct keyboard for your system's country of origin.

When I hit shift and the number 2 instead of an ampersand I get quotation marks..I am not sure what I did to make this happen and I do not know how to fix it

Press ctrl+shift - it will come back to normal. It's very annoying combination. You can remember about it or switch it off:
1. Control Panel
2. Regional and language options
3. Language tab
4. Details button
5. Settings tab
6. Key settings button
7. Switch between input language - change key sequence
There you can switch it off by checking off Switch keyboard layout.
This tip is for Win XP, but in later versions it should work similar.
Hope I helped, if so - rate me!

I get the wrong symbol when typing on my new dell

Hold-down the ALT GR ("alternate graphic") key, to the right of the space-bar, and press the '2' key, release the ALT GR key, and you should get '@'.

The keys are not synchronised properly. The @ key and the " are typing each others symbol. ie I have to press shift 2 to get the @ symbol and vice versa.

you are using a usa keyboard.
if you want to use the uk keyboard layout change the regional settings, go to languages and there is an option to change the keyboard.
uk keyboard will print " when pressing shift+2

Some keys on my Dell D610 have swapped their functionality when the shift key is pressed - @ and " in particular. Can I swap them back?

Go into Control Panel, Regional and Language Options, Languages Tab, Details Button, Change Default Input Language to English - US, and remove any Keyboards listed that are not English US. Most likely you have set a French Input as a default. Once chnages are made, log out of Windows and log back in.
