Re: k45 started smoking while mixing cookie dough

There is the possibility that if the mixer is 30 years old and it has never been serviced that the gasket around the gear case is leaking oil and in that case it would not be hard to get liquids on the armature or the stator as the gear grease in the transmission is vegetable base grease and it separates into liquids and solid and when the head is tilted up the failed gasket allows the separated oil to leak down and to the rear onto the mixer right onto the motor parts. It maybe nothing more that cleaning out all the old grease and re-packing and adding a new gasket.

Re: k45 started smoking while mixing cookie dough

Some electric motors are picky.  turning the 'worm gear' mechanism (take the paddle and bowl off) and turn the mixing part of the mixer, then try turning it on.  many new electrical motors have a sort-of 'burning' smell to them, but there is a big difference between the normal, new electric motor smell and a ''WOW that shouldn't smell like that'' smell...

however, smoke is never good - and its nearly impossible to spill liquid on the motor of a kitchen aid - go ahead, try to access that motor!!!

Plug off the mixer

do you smell or see any smoke ?
if so the motor is burning due to the leakage of liquid on it

Kitchenaid 525 stopped working while mixing cookie dough

Let it completely cool and then start again. It overheated because your speed was set too low for the heaviness of the dough. I have burned up three kitchenaid stand mixers so far making bread. go up one setting at least; if it is straining, go up another.

Hi, We have a 3phase Hobart D300 Mixer onboard and the cooks are complaining that there is not enough grunt. I have checked the 3 speeds and they are working finee however when dough is being mixed it...

Hello Veelec,

As the machine is mixing dough it seems that it is getting sluggish. This is caused by the machine being over loaded. Although it is a 30 qt mixer that is for liquid filled capacity. I do not know what kind of dough you are mixing so I will give you a light to medium dough and then the heavy dough capacity. Also on this machine all dough should be mixed in speed 1 or low to keep from damaging the machine.

You will need to know the Absorption Rate (AR) of you dough, to find this you take the weight of the water divide the weight of the water and multiply by 100.

AR = Water Weight / Flour Weight x 100%

The higher the percent the higher the capacity the lower the percent the lower the capacity. Also the temperature of the water will have to be considered as the colder the water the harder the dough it is to mix the dough the batch should be reduced by 15% to 20% for water temperature between 65-75 degrees.

For a Light to Medium dough with a 60% AR the unit capacity is 45 pounds in first speed.
For a Heavy dough at 55% the units capacity is 30 pounds in first speed.

The above capacities are for bread doughs, if you are doing pizza dough, dough nut dough or wheat dough please post back to this thread and I will help you to find the capacities.

I hope that I have helped you with your problem and would like to thank you for using FixYa to find a solution to your problem.

My mixer just started smoking while i was mix some

Your mixer may still be good, let it cool down and then check it out, If it runs OK then there is no problem. The motor in your mixer probably over heated from trying to mix bread dough which will make any mixer work hard. These mixers will get warm when over worked but unless heavy smoke was coming out and you were getting a burning enamel smell it is probably OK. Let it cool and try it but I suggest you not use it for bread any more.

I have an old kitchenaid K5-A mixer that I inherited from my grandmother. It has been working fine until recently. When my wife turned it on to mix up some cookie dough, the engine started to smoke. I...

well Kevin your mixer is indeed old and the parts for it are most likely no longer available. I would first visually inspect and wiring in the unit. if this seems okay, it could be that your field winding is gone or the worm gear inside that drives the unit is simply burnt out. hope this helps.

Used the bread kneading hook, after 10 minutes, smoking

The mixer motor has probably overheated, as proper use and care was not being followed with the stand mixer.

Bread doughs are recommended to be mixed on speed 2 only and never for longer than 7 minutes. With the resistance of a bread dough that is provided against the beater, mixing for over 7 minutes may overheat mixer and cause smoking.

Please consult your use and care guide to refresh your memory about how to properly use your mixer for making bread doughs.

Which kenwood mixer to buy?

Hi. Congratulations for researching mixers. I wish I had before I bought my Kitchenaid HD Pro. All mixer manufacturers over-rate their products. Goto and do a search for each mixer you are considering. Most mixer failures are caused by mixing heavy cookie or bread doughs. Although manufacturers claim that their mixers can easily handle these doughs...They cannot! My Kitchenaid self-destructed after 30 batches of bread dough. "For the way it's made"! Indeed! I solved my problem by buying a Hobart N50 mixer. It's a 5qt. and handles anything I throw into the bowl. I bought mine used, and refurbished it myself. New these units cost $2,035.00 USD.

If this solution has assisted you, please rate it. Good luck! ricardok45.

Dry clumps in pizza dough

Hi. You should consider a few things. They type of hook you use, can greatly affect your end result. If you're making a yeasted dough with a high protein percentage 12-13%, you should be using an "ED" hook, this is a spiral hook that has a sharp turn at the tip. You can find them on eBay for a competitive price. I believe that Hobart also sells them, but for a higher price. They are very good for mixing pizza type doughs, they also do an excellent job kneading the dough.

Have you checked the flour for lumps before it goes into the mixer? Have you tried sifting the flour?
Are you adding all the liquid and flour at once? If so try adding flour in stages to all the liquid. If you find that this solution helps you, please rate it. Good luck! ricardok45

MIxer quit working while mixing 3 batches of oatmeal cookies

Hi. Kitchenaid's warranty is 1 year.

Most likely, the plastic transmission housing has failed, causing damage to the working parts inside your mixer. Take it to a local repair place and have them work up a quote to repair it. It will take at least a month to get the parts.

If this solution has assisted you, please rate it. ricardok45
