If you don't know, I'd suggest that you leave it alone.
Bios (basic in and out) is the lowest level of system operations, and miss setting any one of them could make for a bad day for your laptop.
Good luck

How do I change the bios settings to boot from a dvd to down grade from windows 8 to windows 7 please.

To activate the BIOS utility, press <F2> during the POST while the
computer logo is being displayed.
To set the boot sequence in the BIOS utility, activate the BIOS utility, then select Boot from the categories listed at the top of the screen.
You can then choose the order in which the BIOS seeks bootable media. For your purposes the optical drive needs to be the first option. Do remember that during the boot sequence there are only about 5 seconds where it will say "Press any key to boot from CD......" after which it will revert to booting from the hard drive.
If you go to this site,
Drivers and Manuals
you can choose your model from the options lists and can then download drivers and documents which you may need after your downgrade.
Hope this is helpful, if so would you please register that with Fixya

NEC laptop stuck in Phoenix BIOS Setup Utility

While in the BIOS setup utility, go through the tabs/menus looking for BOOT sequence. Configure the laptop to boot from CD-Drive before any other drive. Have the installation CD in drive.Save the changes made to the BIOS configuration, and exit the BIOS. Reboot.
If the installation medium itself does not have a problem, you should be able to boot from it and have the opportunity to install the operating system.

How to Reflash Motherboard BIOS About updating BIOS... The whole BIOS updating procedure should be treated with extreme caution. If you do not encounter any system instability or bugs with the current BIOS version, we suggest that you keep it. If you determine to flash BIOS, you are taking a personal risk of BIOS flash failure. Please contact your supplier or our distributors/resellers for further remedy in case system crashes unfortunately because of BIOS flash failure. Before you begin... 1. Please make sure the BIOS version you want to flash matches your motherboard model. 2. If your BIOS is flash protected, please do not enable BIOS Flash Protection under Advanced CMOS Setup (AMI BIOS) or Advanced BIOS Features (AWARD BIOS) in BIOS menu. 3. Never interrupt when you BIOS is being updated. 4. Because BIOS flashing is potentially risky, if you do not encounter problems using the current version of BIOS, it is recommended that you not flash the BIOS. To flash the BIOS, do it with caution. What is the boot up sequence please

You need to go inside BIOS to find out whats the boot sequence. To activate the BIOS Utility, press F2 during POST (when “Press <F2> to enter Setup” message is prompted on the bottom of screen).
Press F2 to enter setup. The default parameter of F12 Boot Menu is set to “disabled”. If you want to change boot device without entering BIOS Setup Utility, please set the parameter to “enabled”.
Press <F12> during POST to enter multi-boot menu. In this menu, user can change boot device without entering BIOS SETUP Utility. Navigate to BOOT page on top.

Hope this helps!

Under (setup utility) save settings are all disabled. need to able (restore settings) (load default settings) (save set- tings). in settings utility. my name is joe. can u help?

The bios shouldnt block you from saving unless it cant do it.

If this computer is more than 5 years old you may want to replace the bios battery on the motherboard and try saving your settings again.

Also, check with IBM on how to erase bios password if it has one.

Good luck and be careful.

No processor bios update

Sounds like you need to flash the BIOS (UPDATE the BIOS).

Do you know how to do this? The way I do it is by setting up a USB key as a boot device and have the FLASH utility on there....

which contains files to create the FLASH utility either on:

... as well as some guides on what to do and other helpful stuff.

Its worth noting that if you have made any changes to BIOS, they will be restored to the 'factory' settings when you FLASH in the updated BIOS.

This should work, let me know if it doesn't.

First reboot the computer and enter the bios screen. Disable the bios protect...

Then reboot back into the OS (Presumably windows) and download the bios update from the manufacturer website. It will probably be a zip file containg the bios and the flash utility. Unzip the file and you should have a windows and/or DOS flash utility. If not, the utility should be posted on the website. If the utility is Windows, simpy run the utility. It will ask for the location of your bios file. The update utility will do the rest for you. If the program is DOS, the procedure is similar. Move the utility and bios update into your root directory, reboot, and simpy run the program from the command line.
