Just got this camera. After taking a couple shots of my grandkids, one of them bumped into me and the camera hit the table. The fall was less than 10 inches but now the lens will not retract. I am pretty mechanical and wanted to know if there was anything I could do

Re: Len does not retract
I Guyess not the gearing is broken. These item are not usually repairable- like most small electronics. See of you can get a replacement under warranty- you dont have to say howe it came not to be working exactly.

sounds like you have dust, sand of some type stuck in the retracting lense. Ive found someone to tell me to take out my batterys and SD card, then tap the bottom of the camera on a table top. Replace the batteries and power up. Doing this, I was told it loosens up the debri for the lense to retract to close and to open again.
I dropped the camera on the table a couple of times, twisted the front of it. Suddenly the lens retracted into the camera, the beeping quit, and now I can take pictures again. The Samsung website is horrible.
I did the same thing to my camera (twice) and I just took it back to the place where I got it. Since it was within the 6 month return period- they let me exchange it for no charge.
They told me that when the camera hits something while the lens is out, it knocks the lens out of its groove, which is why you can't get it to retract.
replace or jump the tiny surface mount fuses inside. You blew one of these when the lens met resistance when it was trying to do something, expensive labor, .50 cent part. It is $150 minimum from Oly to fix this.
On my EX-Z750 there are two buttons on the top rear, one a right-facing green arrow with a green box around it, the other a red camera icon. If you turn on the camera and accidentally hit the green arrow button you will only be able to review the shots already on the camera. To return to taking pictures, push the red camera icon button.
For DSC-W17: The lens extended (normally I thought), but would not zoom. I shut it, and it was attempting to extract-retract, but shut with the lens rather extracted. Putting constant gentle pressure helped the lens to retract while shutting, even though it was attempting to extract again for 2-3 seconds.
Harder pressure however (about 1/2 kilo strength on wooden desk) made the lens totally unoperational... :(
