Brother mfc-8660dn printer can't pull paper from the paper tray.  Loud clicking sound as the gears on the left side try to engage the paper tray gears

Its not the tire. There is a gear on the left that is supposed to engage gears in the paper tray itself and lift the paper to the right level to contact the tire. The gear is not engaging or is having some difficulty lifting the paper stack.

This is a defect by brother

I have since learned that this can be caused by the paper guides in the tray being slightly off. Doesn't have to be by much. Try re-adjusting the paper guides. I have had good luck with that.

I have the same problem, with a loud clicking, like it is the gears slipping, and then it says "Paper Jam Tray 1", although no paper is jammed. I seems to work better when the tray is packed full of paper, but the problem is getting worse. The guides appear to be in the correct position, and I even tried to adjust them, but nothing seems to resolve the issue.

Try cleaning the tires with alcohol, see if they pick up.

are they real smooth to the touch or do they have a rough edge?

the loud clicking sound maybe a clutch or gear trying to engage and is slipping.

The MP Tray is just above the main paper tray and can be accessed by opening the MP Tray door. To open, pull on either the left or right side of the front door by the circular cutout.

Pull the paper tray, likley a small black lever to the left of the roller called the edge actuator is dislodged and hanging down. When in position the actuator should easily push up and appear flat next to the roller.

Brother MFC-9440CN

Hey andydfw,

If it's those gears that are slipping, 1) you can look at the way the round gear is seating. It needs to be inline with the teeth, if when your looking at the teeth you should notice one of the gears might have some missing teeth, or is worn down to the point the the connecting gear doesn't catch. This will only tell you were the gear problem is.

To repair it: Well, you'll have to go through brother to get a replacement part, and I've seen in the past where they don't sell anything but the basic consumables. How old is the printer? If it's under warranty, Go HERE, and put in your zip code that will get you someone close. If it is under warranty, then it no charge to you to have it repaired. If it not under warranty, he will have both of those gears. He'll examine the threads, and he can determine which one is slipping, or what's wrong with it. It normally doesn't make that type of noise otherwise their something a bit more complicated that warrants seeing an authorized repair guy.

Let me know how it goes.

Thanks Mark

Keeps saying no paper Makes loud clicking noise

The clicking sounds seems to be made by the small gears on the side of the tray. When you move the gears, it should push a plate beneath the paper upwards, and the paper with it, allowing the paper to be feed.

I'm not sure what I did to fix it. I removed the paper and cleaned both feeding rectangles (to the front of the tray -- nearest you). One is underneath the paper and the other is in the front, center.

I then made sure that, when I move the biggest gear (the one that isn't round) that the paper moves upwards.

Brother MFC 8460 N, all in one copier. Loud clicking noise (from tray area) when trying to make a copy, it will not do a copy now, says to load paper - tray has fresh, higher quality paper in it. Is this...

Make sure the stopper in the paper tray is snug against the paper. sounds like the paper is not properly in place and the tires are making the noise.
Could be it's trying to lift the tray and it can't, determine why; something stuck, out of place,
