Re: Whirlpool GS6SHEXNL not making ice

To start let's make sure that the wire we lift to stop the ice when that bucket is full, is in the down position. Now we can concentrate on two possible problems, one the water supply, two the ice maker itself. If you dip your finger in the ice maker, and it's dry then it's a water supply problem. This can be as simple as a kinked supply tube, a bad solenoid (to find it follow water line). It could also be the mechanics in the maker that control the solenoid are stuck or broken, in that case a new maker is needed. Before we go on, make sure the maker's is fully plugged in for power, and if you know how, check to see if the socket, it plugs in, has power. If we have power and you feel hard cubes in the maker ready to be pushed out, then the problem is in the maker itself and will probably need replacement.

hope this helps

My s21s4d fridge ice maker doesnt work, everything else is ok. the motor on the ice m/c doesnt seem to reset itself. how do i fix it.

Hi and welcome to FixYa, I am Kelly.

This appears to be a Whirlpool side by side unit. Commercial Code 858618353010 / Model S21S4D. If I got the brand incorrect please respond with your brand name.
I do not know your geographic location. I am assuming you are outside of the US.

There are a couple of troubleshooting links I will post here. Keep in mind that they are for US units but the only difference will be the operating voltage: This is for the BASIC ice maker without optics.

And Job Aid R-92 (With optics)$FILE/4322658A.pdf
Note there are 2 different optics for these. Pre and post 2002. You will have to determine which one you have. The troubleshooting steps require that you TAPE the door / light switch in the depressed position. Ensure you read all of the set up steps.

Often ice makers stop cycling because the ice maker thermostat never reaches 14 - 16 Deg. F due to a problem with automatic defrosting. Ice builds up on the evaporator coils and air-flow in the freezer gets restricted. It will still freeze but won't make ice until the ice build up is excessive.

If you think you may have an automatic defrosting problem do a MANUAL defrost with an external fan by turning the unit off, removing the freezer contents and directing an external fan into the freezer compartment for just over 2 hours. (water mess so be ready)
While the fan is melting the ice in the freezer compartment... open the lower rear of the unit by removing the fiberboard cover and cleaning the condenser coils, condenser fan, the drip pan and the ver end of the compartment drain tube that terminates in the drip pan. Reinstall rear cover when complete.
After the 2 hours clean up the mess and return the unit to normal service. The unit should start making ice within 8 hours. It will operate normally for 2 days and then if the automatic defrost problem exists... ICEMAKER and freezer performance will degrade after 2 - 3 days.

Hopefully you have enough information now to troubleshoot your icemaker issue.
Thanks for choosing FixYa,

Our ED5SHAXM ice maker is intermitant. It will make ice for several weeks and then suddenly stop making ice, the water flow to the ice maker stopes and the bin empties it's final time. Then weeks later it...

Either the freezer temperature is too high or the internal thermostat inside the ice maker is faulty.
The freezer temp must be 5 degrees or less for the ice maker to work correctly.
If the freezer checks out OK you will need to replace the ice maker.

No water to the Ice Maker

sorry to hear that i hope i still can help check the fill tube that fills your ice maker see if it is frozen if it defroated with a hair dryer if there is no frost then you might have a bad water valve you see there are 2 selenoids on valve one for dispenser and the other one for the ice maker so if you don't get water it could be the valve look at the ice maker are the forks pointing up or down if they are down then you have a bad module on ice maker that is the front part of it. if they are pointing to 1oclock then check valve and tube

Whirlpool gd5shaxkqoo side by side ice maker

Hi. It takes approximatly 3 days to fill the ice container. If it is filling it half way, it should fill it all the way. There is no reason for it to stop making ice unless a cube gets stuck occasionally. Try replacing the water filter. If you are using reverse osmosis to filter your refrigerator water then that is your problem. Refrigerator ice makers don't work well with most reverse osmosis systems. Good luck, Mack
