Not sure, but if it's a 1954 model, it's not an 8N. 8N was only built thru 1952.
But sounds like you will need a new steering shaft.

Is there a simple way to replace a fan belt on a Ford 8N Tractor? This 8N has front drive hydraulics, and there a shaft in the way.

Question edited to add the word 'Tractor' and correct spelling.
Question moved to a category that fits 'Ford, 8N and Tractor'.

Being that old and American, the bolt is probably something like 7/16" Whitworth. These videos may help, but I haven't watched them. You can not get adjustable sockets that have steel pins that grip the flats of the nut.

Shermon shifterin ford 8n

The above link is an excellent site for help. Can you see if the shaft is turning when you try to shift the Sherman Hi/Lo transmission.?
The Sherman units are installed inside the housing between the engine and Ford transmission and I believe you would have to "split" the tractor to access actual Sherman unit. It sounds like either the Hi/lo lever is slipping on the shaft or has broken internally....good luck. Try doing a search for ( Sherman transmission Ford 8n tractor help) there are a lot of Old timer experts out there and this was a very popular addition to the 8n's

I have an 8N Tractor and the gear broke off of the starter shaft. How do I retrieve the broken pieces out of the tractor?

There should be a clutch inspection plate on the bottom of the bellhousing, take that off and you should be able to fish them out.

Is there a simple way to replace a fan belt on a Ford 8N?

there should be a coupler on the driven shaft. take out bolts and gently pry apart. this should allow enough room to work the new belt around the crank pulley

Ford 4000 starter only works when I hit it with a hammer. What does that indicate?

the bendix unit on the starter shaft is sticking. You need to pull the starter and clean the shaft up and lightly grease it so the gear can move out when you engage the starter. worst case scenario you may have a badly worn shaft and need to replace it with a new starter. hope this helps you...

In 3rd gear the front wheels shake on 8N ford Tractor

The quick easy answer is put your feet on the steering shafts just ahead of your feet when sitting on the tractor when driving at speeds causing the shimmy. This is what most people do.

The longer answer is a new or rebuilt steering box or possibly adjustment.

Some (most) boxes have play that cannot be adjusted tight even with a rebuild.
