13 Answers

INK SYSTEM FAILURE Ink system has failed. Unable to copy, receive faxes or print. Refer to printer documentation. error: 0xc19a0013 Press OK This is the error in which I am receiving and I need to know if there is anything I can do to solve this error. The printer scans (in color just fine) and prints (only in green and blue) One second it will say I need to replace pink and another second it will say I need to replace powder blue and dark blue. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Ink System Failure on Photosmart 3210 all-in-one appeared after changing my yellow print cartridge and printing some pictures. It will not copy, scan or print anything. I tried removing the cartridges as outlined in the HP site and still didn't work. I even tried pushing ok, cancel, black and color buttons while turning the printer off and that didn't work. I called HP (my printer is 2 days out of warranty) and they won't do anything for me. I WILL NOT buy another HP PRODUCT)

Same problem on an HP C6180, one month out of warranty. They offered to sell me a refurbished model for the retail price. Outrageous.

I have the same problem on C7180 all in one, which was one of the most expensive all in one units in the store. Won't copy. OXC 19a 0013. The printer has been replaced once before under warrenty after about 10 phone calls. I am now out of warrenty and will never buy HP again.

  • richard_gold Jan 23, 2009

I have a HP 3210 and after replacing a ink cartridge I received a "Ink System Failure" error message #Oxc18a007. I did the limited troubleshooting instructons issued by HP and then pulled up the Internet for more suggestions and better detailed troubleshooting instructions found on FixYa.

Nothing worked! After all the various instructions I kept getting the "Ink System Failure" error message. If anyone sees an object flying through the air within the next few days, it will probably be my HP All-in-One.

I have been a HP loyalist for years but the horse is dead and I'm tired of beating it. Now instead of spending my time researching this problem, I'll just have to research other printer companies to determine who offers a better and more reliable product than HP.

I found a solution to this problem on another site and am posting the main part of it here:

Christina: Let us perform some steps to isolate the issue and find a fix for it.
Christina: Please perform the following steps and let me know the message that will be displayed on the printer.
Christina: A. - Press and hold the “*” key.
B. - Press the “#” key and release both keys.
Display should say “Enter Special Key Combo”
C. - Press and release in sequence the “1”, “2” and “3” buttons.
CustomerName: ok
CustomerName: screen says "support" R0631M
Christina: Fine.
Christina: 2. Press and release the right arrow button until the display says “System Configuration Menu”.
Christina: 3. Press and release the “OK” button.
Christina: 4. Display should say “Hardware failure status”. If not there already, Arrow Key over to “Hardware failure status”,
Christina: 5. Press and release the “OK” button.
Christina: 6. Display should say “Hardware failure status: Clear. Press OK to clear”.
CustomerName: yup
Christina: 7. Press and release the “OK” Button. Message changes to “Hardware failure status Cleared. Press Cancel to continue”.
CustomerName: ok
Christina: 8. Press and release the “CANCEL” button as many times as necessary, so that, either the “Welcome to Photosmart Express” screen appears, or, the “Ink System Failure” screen appears. PLEASE DO NOT TRY TO PRINT AT THIS STAGE.
CustomerName: ok
Christina: 9. Using the Power Button, turn the unit OFF and unplug the power cable from back of the printer and wall outlet.
CustomerName: done
Christina: Fine.
Christina: 10. Wait 30 seconds for the power to get discharged and then plug the power cable into the wall outlet first and then into the back of the printer
CustomerName: done
Christina: 11. Turn the unit on. The printer may display message “USE POWER BUTTON TO SHUTDOWN THE PRINTER” followed by “PRESS OK TO CONTINUE”. Press OK. The Printer will start the “ONE TIME INK INITIALIZATION PROCESS”. Allow this process to complete and do not interrupt. Once the initialization process is complete, the printer will print out a Diagnostic Page.
CustomerName: made a buncha noise, and it didn't print a diagnostic page
Christina: Good.
Christina: Is the error message still being displayed on the printer?
CustomerName: nope
Christina: Good.
CustomerName: should I try to print something?
Christina: Let us print a self test page to check the functionality of the printer.
Christina: Press Setup menu on the All-in-One then scroll using the arrow key and select Print Report then select Self Test Report.

The fix for this problem turned out to be nothing more than performing a master reset of the printer. To do this you need to push the "OK", "Cancel", "Black", and "Color" button while turning off the power. This reset sequence seems to be the same for all of the HP All-in-one Printers.

Once this was done I also updated the firmware/software. I am now able to print and copy.

I have a HP Photosmart 3210 All-in-One printer and I had an " Ink System Failure" Error # 0xc18a (something), and I tried the Master Reset that consisted of pushing "OK" "Cancel" "Black" & "Color" buttons while turning the Power button and It worked!!!!! My next step would have been to remove the internal battery, but I didn't have to go that far.

HP Customer Support was no help. I called them first and their only solution was to pay them $200.00 for a system upgrade. Which probably constisted of me sending in my printer so they can send me someone elses printer back to me, after they probably Master Resetted themselves.

Anyways I Happy Now.

Ok - I feel duty bound to post something on this as I'm on my second one of these and have been through this many times now. It seems like any one of the above resets can help with this on some occasions.

I'll also say I'm sure this happens with replacement cartridges when the printer has been left standing for a while. Both me and my business partner have these and he's never had an issue. His printer is pretty much in constant use.

I recently had this and none of the above resets worked. A post somewhere on air locks and blockages resonated so I tried a different approach. If you move the print carriage/head over to the left side you can access the rubber ink delivery tubes (all on one strip). I just squeezed along these as if trying to clear a blockage. I then ran a self test report from the manufacturing menu (* + #, then 329). It started then printing black again. I was literally just about to go and buy a lexmark.

Hope this helps someone else. Thoroughly disappointed with these devices on durability. If you're buying in the UK now on printers, this is one of the few areas I'd advise buying extended warranty. It'll pay for itself in 366 days.......probably twice over on the 3 yr extended warranty.

C7180 all-in-one, the black would not print. I did all the steps in the post Solution 7(as well as others) "Ink System Failure Trouble shooting guide" which was from hp_ Tech. which is what everyone else saying to do. But I tried looking at the ink tubes that go into the cartridge from the printer on the black and it looked dryer than all the other colors tubes. So I used a needle to clean out the hole and a couple pages later and 2 "clean Printerhead"s later the black worked!
This simple solution should be one of the first things to look at. Just remove the color that won’t print and shine a light on it. If it looks different than the other color tubes clean it out some way. I used a needle.

Initially had the problem on a 6180 that was out of warranty. didn't think to google for a solution :(
replaced with a 7280. 11 months old, problem occured. tried the solution here, didn't work and i didn't want to purchase a new set of HP ink carts to persue it. HP replaced under warranty. two months later, same problem.
out of warranty but i decided to gamble on a new set of genuine HP ink carts. short answer was it took 4 hours and 25% of the ink carts and it finally came good.
i'm fairly convinced that it it is an issue with air in the ink tubes and the firmware will not purge without a genuine set of HP ink carts. even then there is an issue with the purge not clearing the air out of the ink tubes. it may also be an issue with the print heads gumming up and this prevents the purge from completing properly.
but at aus$90 for a set of genuine hp ink carts for a aus$350 printer on the off chance it may fix it eventually, i'm not impressed.
previous printer to all of this was a g95 which completely died. might be time to consider another brand of printer when this one dies again.

If the problem code is 0xc19a0013 you can try the following which cleared the problem for me by:

  1. Remove usb or ethernet cable from the printer.
  2. Open the cover of the product and remove the print cartridges.
  3. Close the cover and wait for the Insert Ink Cartridges message to display.
  4. Disconnect the power cord from the back of the product and the wall socket, then wait for one minute.
  5. Reconnect the power cord. If the product does not automatically turn on, press the Power button.
  6. Open the cover and reinsert the print cartridges.
  7. Close the cover. If prompted, print a calibration page.
  8. Print a Self Test to verify product is functional.
  9. Now you can connect the Ethernet cable.

Hey presto! The problem went away for me...

Someone above suggested what I was thinking. I sometime has issues with my HP not working 100% or not giving an error, usually a master reset is the quick fix for the problem. I hope your issue has been resolved.

SOURCE: Ink system failure

Try the following reset:

Hold the OK and the Help button at the same time. While holding them down, plug the power in. Continue to hold both buttons until the unit shut off.
After shutting down, release both buttons and power on the printer.

Alternatively follow instructions on this document from HP.

Open the printer as if to replace an ink cartridge. On the print head there is a black plastic arm about 2 inches long. Re-connect this with the white cog wheel so that the protruding part is in the center of the black arm. Close lid, power on and job done.
