Thin black horizontal lines on JVC PD-42WV74 EDTV

My plasma is about 3 years old. About a year ago, a thin horizontal black line appeared about 8" from the top of the screen. This single thin line has now generated into several lines to form two bands of thin lines about a half inch wide each. The lines are present at all times regardless of signal input. JVC has not offered any solutions except to contact a JVC repairman. The repair companies won't even discuss the problem unless I pay a $90 fee. At this time, I don't even know if it is a serviceable problem. Thanks for any help provided.

The lines are present at all times regardless of signal input. Its not in a high temperature environment, so I don't know if its one of the circuit boards or the panel itself. Thanks for your reply!

The lines are in the top section of the screen about 6 to 8 inches from the top. They go from one side to the other. They started as one thin line and have generated into several thin lines. The problem is getting progressively worse. JVC has told me that without a warranty they won't do anything, but they may hope that I will just go away,, but I will ask about their policy towards panel replacement. Thanks for your help!

My 42" plasma is about 3 years old. It is out-of-warranty. About a year ago, a thin horizontal black line appeared about 8" from the top of the screen. It runs all the way across the screen. This single thin line has now generated into several thin lines to form two bands of lines about a half inch wide each. The lines are present at all times regardless of signal input; when the DVD player is used, the same lines are present. JVC has not offered any solutions. They say that if your warranty has expired, then you must contact an authorized JVC service center. The service companies will not talk to you about the problem. You must engage them for an initial $90 fee. Then a serviceman will come to your home and tell you what the problem is. So, at this time it will cost $90 to find out that the screen can't be fixed and a new has to be purchased. Is a bad circuit board generating the lines or are the pixels in the screen going bad, in which case the whole plasma screen has to be replaced? Thanks for any help provided.

willtab, thanks for your reply. What you are saying sounds reasonable. I noticed that when I turned the screen on, there was one row of pixels that alternated from color to black, etc. Once the screen had warmed up, that line of pixels was working ok, Question: Where is the driver board located?
The ribbon cable runs from the board to the screen? When the screen is unplugged, are there still stored HV charges as in a CRT or capacitors or were you refering to operating voltages? Is the back panel to the screen easy to remove? Can these parts be purchased fom JVC?

One more question: Do the connections at the pixel rows both vertical & horizontal go bad and that is the problem with bad panels?
    Thanks again!!

Horizontal line is an idication of a bad board known as a x driver board. Their may be a slight possiblitliy it can be a small ribbion cable that runs from the driver board to the plasma panel. Another possiblility it can be a bad panel... but from the symptoms you describe i would first have to look at that driver board. and the sympton that getting worse makes me lean toward a bad ribbion cable.. if that could be reseated....well that the first thing as a technician i would try. Carefull Television generate dangerous voltages.

removing the back should be not too hard there 12 screws on outside rim and 9 others. Lay the screen on piece of foam or a blanket to keep fron scratching the screen

on the left side of the unit there are two small green boards along the side.the upper and the lower y driver boards. im sorry i think i told you x boards. these board have ribbion cables running from them to the panel there brown in color. since u said the line in top of screen i would check the top board. these ribbion cables are delicute and fragile. be careful damage and theres no fixing. There 3 of them on each board the boards also have 4 small black squares that are chips. check to see if any of these apear burnt or damaged. the goal is to reseat these connectors. dont force them. I have damage these before.

As long as u have this set uplug and u stay away from supply lines it should not hold a charge. just be carefull

THe driver boards upper y driver is jvc#lj92-00796A lower y driver lj9200797a

Sorry..one more thing...Ussally if a pixel goes bad it doesnt mean the whole line goes bad...pixel goes bad that does mean the panel has a problem

It depends on the size and the location, because it is like all plasma tv's. Some experience this Pixel problem, but like I said, depending on where its located and what section it's in. Most pixel problems they say you can not fix you will need a new panel. If it's not he pixel then depending on where it's located it could be a bad board inside unit. Don't really know JVC policy but most Bad Pixel panels the company has to replace, if it's the board then probably if you don't have a warranty then it would be on you. These are my thoughts either way, you will need to find out about what is in warranty, ask about if it turns out to be a bad panel do they stand behind it. And see what they say.

Hello
Check its power supply board for any damaged capacitors. Replace them if found or suspected. Take special care to main filter capacitors. check all the output voltage smoothing capaciotrs too.
If all are OK, and still the problem perists, replace the power supply board as card basis.

A horizontal thin black line has appeared across screen.

hi all .ive had the same problem,a thick black line down screen.sometimes it flickers from top to bottom and other permantly in view.but i have solved it.forget your ic boards and taking apart tv.have you got either a ps3 or wii connected to tv.if so unplug power lead from socket and relocate in seperate socket.make sure the lead is completely free of any other leads and you might just find this works.i think the power lead creates some sort of frequency that the tv picks up .good luck hope it works

JVC PD-42DX6BJ plasma 42 inch black horizontal lines over the pic

Here's a link to order the original the JVC upper Y-buffer board and lower Y-buffer board for this model from a major parts distributor if needed:

JVC "PD-42DX6" Replacement Part Upper Y - Buffer Board (LJ41-02760A)

JVC "PD-42DX6" Replacement Part Lower Y - Buffer Board (LJ41-02761A)

Based on the symptoms: It is possible that the Y-buffers are faulty, which may require the replacement of the Y-sus board as well. You may want to get a local technician to diagnose the unit and provide a second opinion.

I believe that this monitor will not work unless you have the cable from the media center to the monitor hooked up, I have all the parts from one of these due to the screen being defective on one of my customer's TV like yours. I have the connection cable that I could sell for $ 20. + Priority shipping of $5.65
