Question about Philips 50P8341 50" Rear Projection Television

1 Answer

Philips 50P8342 Hello, I have a Philips 50P8342 that I received from a friend for free. I knew it had problems so I checked on the internet for common problems. The search pointed me in the direction of the SSM so I removed it and cleaned the gold-fingers on the SSM and also cleaned the connector contacts. I put it back in and didn't see any change so I started investigating further. I have 3 known symptoms: 1) The tv has a problem with convergence. The center of the screen is OK. But in all four corners of the set (about a 8" square ), I see ghosting (double images). Sorry I'm not a tv repair expert so I hope I'm using the correct terminology. I entered the DCM mode to set convergence and I notice that the G, R, and B horizontal and vertical grid lines do not hold a straight line at the corners. I'm able to adjust convergence and align the center for G, R and B mostly but the lines in all four corners are drastically off. Is this symptom circuit related or non-circuit related (i.e. mirror or CRTs)? 2. When the tv has been on for a while, the sound begins to cut in and out. 3. When I entered the SAM mode for the first time, the ERR buffer was 31 33 32 7 0 0. I noted it and erased the ERR buffer. Now, when I go into the SAM mode I consistently see an ERR code of 30 "CSP i2c error". I have not done any signal probing yet. But based on the ERR code, the fault seems to be either the SSM and/or the convergence processor (circuit related). Thanks for reviewing my post.

This set has an SSB module, they are notorious for causing the set to fail with strange symptoms like the freezing up you are experiencing. This board needs replaced it is a very small board about the size of a deck of cards, mounted vertically on the left hand side. The cost of this board is usually over $200.00. I have worked on many of these, and one thing you need to be aware of is that i have received new board in that were defective, this was a chronic issue, and if you buy a board make sure you can return it, if the tv begins to have other strange problems most likely that board you purchased is defective as well. This is a big issue with this set including the repeat failures of this board

I have a Philips 50p8342 television. When it is

Sounds like you are tripping your crowbar circuit. This is most commonly caused by one of the Red Green or Blue brightness adjustments, adjusted too high. The crowbar circuit protects your high voltage guns from getting damaged. I know this because I just did this myself. My adjustments were behind the lower rear panel in a small box screwed to the chassis. There are 6 tuning pots on mine. 3 for focus of the RGB and 3 for brightness of the RGB. The focus ones didn't seem to have any effect on the crowbar circuit. However, by turning the brightness down on each of the RGB pots I could get the T.V. to stay on indefinately.
