there is no setting to find. clean charger port with rubbing alcohol and a tooth brush, be gentle. turn off - let dry and recharge for 2 hrs. worked for me. pain I know. taking battery out will not help. but should check battery conections to see if they are clean,do the same as above. if purple you have water damage. verizon warranty is void if this is the case.

SOURCE: car kit mode???
The Car Kit message is usually caused by corrosion in your charging port. Yes, holding * may revive the phone, but your best bet is to get some contact cleaner and a toothbrush and clean out your charging port.

I had this problem when I left my phone outside. It didn't rain, but it was 90 degrees and 80% humidity! I took out the battery and there was no moisture, so I scraped some with a knife into the charger port. Nothing. I kept trying, turning on and off and scraping and poking. I also plugged it into the charger and did a lot of wiggling. Something finally worked. No more "car kit". Thank God. My point? Don't give up, keep messing with the port and you may have luck. Better than buying a new phone, or even having to sign a new contract if you are eligible for a new phone

Yes, it can be solved! This happened to mine and Verizon was no help. I finally found the solution on the internet. The little prongs inside the charging port are touching, get a magnifying glass and flashlight and you'll see it. I took a toothpick and seperated them and the problem was fixed instantly!
