Finepix E550 -suddenly very grainy photos and over exposed?

Have you checked what ISO you have selected here?
Graininess and over exposure can be caused by selecting the wrong ISO ( which in film days was ASA ( film speed) The average ISO should be 100 some early models allowed ISO 64 or similar. Having it set at 400 -800 ISO can also have the pics come out grainy. But not nescessarily overexposed unless you point directly at the light source as these ratings are for low light/movement situations. The video mode usually sets itself up differently to picture mode. The fact that you say your video is OK says there is nothing wrong with the lens or sensor, just the settings you have initially chosen to have autoed.
