I used the windows vista upgrade CD ( Which generally comes with most PCs and laptops nowadays) that came with the PC aspire L100. I also tried Windows XP home edition ( which did not come with PC).

I have two partion of Hard disk, one of which used to have the restoration program, but unfortunately I formatted the drive and the first partition contains nothing now. I am running Ubuntu from CD but have n't tried to install it because I fear I might lose all my data backuped on another partition.

No No I did not partition the hard disk. There were two drives already in the PC. I have nothing installed in my computer now since C:\ is formatted. D:\ has my back up data. What I want to do is install a fresh Windows ( No matter which version). I have a windows vista upgrade CD that came with PC and a separate windows Xp CD. Now suggest me how do I install windows. I tried both but computer shuts down during the installation. I still have warranty but don't know what to do and ACER doesn't seem to have a good customer service like DELL.

C: and D: are not two hard drives but partitions on a single drive.I contacted acer support they said it might be due to the driver problem. They asked $55 for a set of CDs that has all drivers for the PC and Windows installation. They said Vista upgrade CD doesn't work in my situation because I have formatted c: which erased some files that may be required for windows installation. I still don't beleive that I can't install windows myself without purchasing those CDs.

if you partition your hard drive and try to run two operating systems it wont work if the OS are not compatible, and vista and XP are not compatible with any thing else.. this was most likely your problem, and when you do install you have to set your program in an active partition, when you load the os make sure you are installing it into the primary partition if not it will not work.

if you disconnect the slave drive until after the install it will work better a lot of times when installing programs in a PC with two hard drives the cpu will try to put programs on both drives and that wont work have you tried disconnecting the slave drive. you can tell it by the jumper setting by the poer connection if you have to pull one out and look atnthe front and see how its configured compared to the schematic on the hard drive. then when done try loading either program.

In BIOS change the boot order such that CD/DVD comes first. You will also need to make sure your hard drive runs in IDE mode since Windows XP doesn't support sata drives by default. FYI XP is going end of life early 2014.

Hi there !

Yes, it can be repair and all you need in Windows XP installer CD to repair your operating system and all your information will be brought back.

1. If you have the Windows XP installer CD, put in the CDROM drive and turn on your computer and try to make sure that it will boot up in your CDROM drive. A message will display " press any key to boot to CD" and press any key.

2. After it will go to Windows XP set up and below instruction will appear:

a. To set up Windows XP now, press Enter
b. To repair Windows XP installation using recovery console, press R
c. To quit set up without installing Windows XP, press F3

Since you want to repair it, you should press R to repair and it will not delete your files on that partition.

3. After that just go on through the process and after repairing it will reboot itself and run Windows XP.

I hope it helps you. Good Luck and Thank you for using FixYa !

Apparently the XP Pro CD you are using is pre-SP2, thus causing the error. With XP RTM and SP1, you need to supply the proper SATA drivers for the chipset on the motherboard since there is no built-in support for SATA drives. You can download the drivers from http://www.ecs.com.tw/ECSWebSite/Downloads/DownloadFile.aspx?catid=1&driverid=2214&areaid=2&LanID=0

During the XP setup you will need to press F6 to install these driver before attempting to copy the XP files to the drive. Or you could make a custom XP CD using the directions at http://maxeasyguide.blogspot.com/2008/04/preparations-for-winxp-installation-cd.html that has these SATA drivers already slipstreamed into the installation procedure.

Or if you know someone who has the WinXP Pro SP2 CD, you could borrow that for the install.

''can't load res_dll''

If you have or have had a linksys wireless networking device on your computer its software is the cause for the error. You must uninstall the device using its supplied installation cd. Using the windows add/remove software utility does not remove the software. It will remain on your system even if not visible on the installed programs list. Insert the installation cd then exit/cancel out of the installation. Click START then MY COMPUTER then right click on the drive showing the linksys name. Click OPEN then click the "utility" folder. There you will click on the "setup" icon. This will run the uninstall utility and remove all the linksys software from your computer. There is more than one "setup" file at this stage, the one you want will show "setup.exe" as its description as you roll the cursor over it.When its done remove the cd and restart the computer. You can install linksys usb networking devices using the windows new hardware wizard and they will run with no problems.

My laptop is not switching on

  1. Boot the computer using the XP CD. You may need to change the boot order in the system BIOS so the CD boots before the hard drive. Check your system documentation for steps to access the BIOS and change the boot order.
  2. When you see the "Welcome To Setup" screen, you will see the options below This portion of the Setup program prepares Microsoft
Windows XP to run on your computer:

To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER.

To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R.

To quit Setup without installing Windows XP, press F3.
  3. Press Enter to start the Windows Setup. note.gifTo Repair Install, press ENTER

I repeat, do not choose "To repair a Windows XP installation using the Recovery Console, press R".
  4. Accept the License Agreement and Windows will search for existing Windows installations.
  5. Select the XP installation you want to repair from the list and press R to start the repair. If Repair is not one of the options, END setup. After the reboot read Warning#2!
  6. Setup will copy the necessary files to the hard drive and reboot. Do not press any key to boot from CD when the message appears. Setup will continue as if it were doing a clean install, but your applications and settings will remain intact.
