I have very valuable info in that drive, i do have a data recovery software on y desktop, but i can´t have plug in long enough to run it.

(I apologize for my english, it´s my second language and i am still learning it)

Some laptop manufacturers use the 4 pins to the side of the data connection to force Master / Slave. Do you have a jumper shorting 2 of these pins? If so, remove the jumper and try it again in your external caddy. Had this problem 2 weeks ago with a Toshiba notebook having the Blue Screen of Death. Removed the jumper and then the disk worked perfectly!! Strange but True.

Cheers

If this isn't caused by a power issue I would try something like Knoppix to get to your files I wouldn't use XP, this might be a problem with the XP Kernal crashing and Knoppix might just be able to do what you need to save your data.

Here are some instructions on how to do this. Knoppix is a Live CD Linux OS. This means you can boot to a cd-rom drive and run an operating system to retrieve files from a failed operating system.

In your case I know you have a working OS and are using an external drive.

Recover files from broken XP Operating System using knoppix 4.0 and another working system across a network...
------------------------------------------------------------

load knoppix 4.0 from cd-rom

get ip address by using 'ifconfig' from the 'konsole'
launch the konsole by using the computer monitor icon in the startbar
then type ifconfig to get your ip address

now use the start menu and go to 'knoppix' and 'services' then choose
'start samba server'.

Use 'knoppix' as the password.
Make sure you say 'yes' to export all harddrives so they can be mounted,
read and written from the remote machine.

Now get on an XP machine and use the run prompt to connect to the IP address.

Let me know if you need more help with this if you want to try this route.

What thats telling me is you either have bad hard drive, or hardware or software conflict.
does the hard drive work in another pc?
what OS is on the hard drive if any?
you can get a windows nt boot disk

Does it really shut down the computer by itself? Do you have an Operating System installed on it? The only thing I could think of is that the drive has something faulty on the PCB of the drive that is shorted or causing it to sink too much current and that shuts off your power supply. I've never heard of this though or come across it in real life.

Describe your problem in more detail

If you try to initialize it, you will destroy your data.
Try another PC or better still a Mac. You may be able to read it but it should spin up otherwise it could be the usb connector.

I pulled the seagate 2.5"

Hello,

When you use external adapters to plug drives into USB ports the drive needs to be set for mast not slave. The internal drive is one one channel and external drive is on a different channel so neither drive is a slave, both are masters with not slave drive present. Try removing the jumper you installed and try the drive, it should be seen because all windows XP or later do not need drivers for USB drives.

I hope this helps, if so please rate my solution.

Try connecting it to a different computer.

EXACTLY what error-message do you get?

When you double-click that entry in Device Manager, and click "reinstall drivers", allow Windows to connect to the Internet to look for a device-driver for the USB-to-disk-drive adapter (no device-driver is needed for the disk-drive itself).
