Dell 1700 image drum

Is there anyway I can fool the printer to believe I have changed the image drum on my dell 1700 printer?

After I refilled my dell 1700 toner, the printouts have a gray shade.

    - I verified that the drum is always covered with a toner. Then I used soft napkins to clean the drum.

    - Still getting the same gray background. I think the problem was in the waste hopper located in the drum unit.

    - I disassembled the drum unit and removed all the waste toner and cleaned tha blade.

-Reinstall toner and drum: same problem.

    - I am told that I have to reset the "drum chip". I tried the proposed solution "door open + cancel button + flashing lights, not good"

    -Does someone has another proposition?

    Thanks

After you replace the imaging drum, you should reset the imaging drum's counter. To reset the counter, YOU MUST LEAVE THE DOOR OPEN AND THEN press and hold the Cancel button until all lights flash in sequence.

Photoconductor kit? Dell 1700 printer

The photoconductor kit is another word for the drum or imaging drum. All three words refer to the same part.

Here is a link from the Dell site for this model.
http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/PopupProductDetail.aspx?c=us&l=en&cs=dhs&sku=310-5404

Once you replace the drum, the printer has to be manually reset. If this is not done, the printer will continue to give this print out. By resetting it, the counter is set back to zero. The drum is good for around 30k prints.

From the Online Manual for the 1700, to reset the counter:
http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/1700n/en/index.htm#online_documentation

To reset the counter, press and hold the Cancel button until all lights flash in sequence.

NOTICE: Resetting the imaging drum's counter without replacing the imaging drum may damage your printer and void your warranty.

Flashing lights

you can try calling Dell support at Technical Support 1-800-624-9896 to verify if the problem is electrical. We had a customer have the same problem after he replaced the imaging drum we found out that the unit still had the problem. He finally figured out that the unit has been exposed to an electrical surge and it caused a problem with the board inside the unit. I would try using a new imaging drum but if the unit is still covered by Dell I would have them replace it.
