if it is so, then you need to install the sound driver of that sound card. it happens because the driver for that sound card is not available on the OS you are using.

Sounds like a driver communication issue. Please try uninstalling the driver and related software, reboot, and then re-install. Make sure to reboot in between.

If you can't keep your laptop stable and on for longer period, and you're experiencing random shutdowns I'd say you're facing a motherboard problem. This failure is actually well known and hapens a lot with Toshiba and HP. You'll most probably need to repair the motherboard that suffers from the Maxim 1987 or Maxim 1532 power chip failure.
The repair process is fairly straightforward, but it isn't for the faint hearted. It requires a resolder of the tiny Maxim 1987 chip that should get your motherboard up and running again in no time. The other alternative is to go for a new motherboard, or just get a new laptop alltogether.
If however your laptop experiences random freezeups, and you notice that the DVD is slow at reading data, and especially if you experienced some random mouse and keyboard freezeups, then you'll need to repair the motherboard from a FSB chip failur, which causes these random freezeups, which is a bit easier to do but still a challenge.
Hope this helps

Do you have sata disks? Go to bios and find a option related to sata or raid, and select "compatible mode" or "ide" depending on your bios. Other way is to have your disks drivers ready and when xp ask to install third party drivers you press F6 or the key that xp wil ask to install this drivers during os instalation.

This is possible but will take some patience. Install Windows XP & Service Pack 2 Then check what drivers are NOT installed by going to device manager. Then go the the Compaq page that lists the drivers for Vista: Make a note of the name/model of these drivers and search for the XP equivelent usually by visitng the device manufacturers website. Im sorry this is complicated and long winded but its the only way.

Crashing during Windows Setup

Check out any hardware that doesnot supports windows xp. remove that and reload the os. it works. or remove all the additional addon cards like modem, network card, printers etc., (just maintain only hard disk, cd rom and floppy drive)then install the os. once os installs add the components one by one to so that the os will detect one by one cheers!
