Format 500GB USB HDD

How do I format an external hard disk USB 2.0 up to 500GB?

My option is up to 31.4GB only, either using Window Disk Manager or Acronis Partition Manager.

Please help.

Thanks a lot and more power.

Re: Format 500GB USB HDD

I had the same problem. The cause was that I was using a USB extension cable that wasn't compatible.

Its working fine now...besides, the disk does not need formatting before use (for windows)

External hard drive cant format into ntfs but only exfat

The propriety NTFS file format is used by the Windows operating system to format internal as well as external hard drives. You can format an external hard drive with the NTFS format using the built-in program included with the Windows operating system. The procedure is straightforward and does not require any additional software. An NTFS-formatted external hard drive can then be used with any PC running a version of Windows that is later than Windows 3.

Plug the cable attached to the external hard drive into a USB port on the PC. Right-click on the "My Computer" icon on the desktop. Select "Manage" from the drop-down menu. Click on "Device Manager" in the left column of the window that appears. Click on the "+" icon next to "Disk drives" that is in the column to the right of "Device Manager." Right-click on the icon of the external hard drive. Select "Properties" from the pop-up window. Click the "Polices" tab at the top of the window that has replaced the pop-up window. Click the "Optimize for performance" button below "Policies." Click "OK" to close the window. Right-click on the icon of the external hard drive in the center column of the window that is still open. Select "Format" from the pop-up menu. Select "NTFS from the "File system" drop-down menu in the new window that appears. Click the "Start" button at the bottom of the window. Wait as a progress bar appears at the bottom of the window and fills in from left to right. Click the red "X" at the right corner of the window once the progress bar has completely filled in. format usb memory stick to ntfs

if you still can see files on the Hard disk from MAC, then the reason of being unabe to explore your file from MS windows is that your hard was initialized by MAC with a format that windows cannot read.
move your data from external hard disk to your MAC then format your hard disk from windows OS with FAT32 format .this format is readable on both MAC and WINDOWS

Want to reformat for another user

Firstly why should you want to reformat the HDD is not clear to me. Anyway, since you want to do it well read on. Go to Start->Control Panel->Admin Tools->Computer Management->Disk Management. here you will get an option to manage your disks whether fixed or removable. Select Removable and select your external disk. From the right pane select the disk that you want to format and right click on it. If it is formatable (which your disk is) it will give an option og formatting. Select and follow the advice. If it does not show then select properties and there you will be able to format for sure. But remember that unless you format the HDD very many times, one can come to know that the HDD is a used one and can even retrieve the data from it. And if you format it so many times then you are reducing the life of the HDD. So the choice is yours.

Seagate 750GB usb HDD asks to format, when opening by double click

The disk is either damaged or the USB interface is damaged.
1) You could try opening the external case and connect the disk to your computer directly (Using IDE/S-ATA cables)
2) Format the HD and use data recovery software/service.

External hdd not detected in my computer but is in device manager

You probably still need to partition it, before you can even format it.
Try the disk manager in Windows.

In the start menu, right-click "My Computer" and in the popup menu, select "Manage".
One computer management comes up, select disk management and there you should see the disk. You can then create a partition and format it.

LaCie 500GB external will not show up on mac desktop. Blue light on, whirrs as if working but no icon on desktop (not mounted)

Did you format the drive using Disk Utility? Open "disk utility" from the dock icon or applications/utilities folder. Click the drive name on the left side of the disk utility window. click the "partition" tab in the window, next click the "options" tab and select GUID Partition scheme, or any Mac compatible scheme, read each explanation of the schemes. Name and resize your partitions, click apply. This is how it works running Leopard, not positive if the same applies to Tiger. I hope this helps you
