Re: Icons on desktop

The icons that flash are probably shortcuts that start with S. The S key is causing both problems most likely. There are screwed labeled with K or a unique icon. All located on the bottom of chassis below keyboard. Remove them and life up the keyboard. Do this while the power is off. Disconnect the ribbon cable from the keyboard and remove it. Power on the laptop and let it boot. Once its to the desktop you can see your result. Then all you need to do is pop out the S key and spray contact cleaner underneath rubber contact sheet. You may have to remove some screws.

I think you need to click right on desktop ...and select ..view..and click the show desktop icons ..try it ..and let me know if this solve the issue ..
Good luck !
In case you reinstalled it clean ..and this is the first time ..or you erased teh icons just need to make new shortcuts ..
For the system icons..just click right on the desktop ..and select properties...and under desktop desktop icons ..or change desktop is a link on the bottom ...of the window..selecting it will open a window where you can select the icons..and click apply ..
For windows 7 right on desktop personalize ..and in the left of the window select change desktop icons..and same thing ...tick the cases..and the main icons will be displayed..apply and OK ..
for the rest need to make shortcuts ..from the start menu ..all programs by one clicking right on the program execution ..and select send to desktop ..
lets hope that this will not be needed..and it is a simple action like I explained in the first lines...

Can see the desktop and icons, but have no control over them with mouse - can click and doubleclick, but to no avail.

I think someone played a practical joke on you. I bet one of your friends changed your desktop to look like it has icons and then hid the real icons.

Right click on your desktop, and then under the "View" menu item, make sure "Show Desktop Icons" is checked.

Also, right click on the desktop and select "Personalize", then at the bottom of the dialog, select "Choose Desktop Background" and change your desktop background.

Welcome screen comes up but when I click on user name it goes to desktop screen background with no icons

This can be fixed..

Press and holt Control+Alt keys and then press Del key one...
Then you need to select the option task manager..
In task manager select file at the top...
Under file select new task and type explore.exe in lower case and push enter..
You must be able to see the start menu and the desktop icon...
If you still dont find the desktop icon - right on desktop and select show all desktop icons...
The problem should be fixed...

Icons are to large for my screen

Right click on desktop,
select Properties,
click settings,
adjust the screen resolution,
click apply,
if not better then try different resolutions until you find the icons are the right size for you and the desktop is the right shape (ie not stretched and not black areas around the edges

Desktop Icons

sounds like you have two stuck keys. The S key and the TAB key. Suggest that you disassemble keyboard and clean it with alcohol.
