They are not user (Repairable) It will have to be repaired buy a shop, Don,t mess around with it, You will just damage it all the more, I have been repairing car audio end home audio (Equipment for 35 (Years) End am a (Certified) Electronics Technician..
I have same problem, over 10 years old, only started when turned on, but does it @ anytime now . any solutions ? and this thing does weigh a ton. never had a problem ever, great tv, great picture, etc., anytime a function is initiated screen blinks on off at will, stays on for the most part, no other problem, but can this be repaired or is it time to buy a new tv ?
It has been quite sometime, that I have repaired this TV. In one case the audio IC with standby is bad. The symptom you describe, is my first area of trouble shooting. You may resist the temptation to replace this TV. I understand. It would be better to replace this TV. Sony is a unique TV, and parts for this may be substituted with non originals. Even if this set is repaired, it will be a matter of short time that it will go down. I would certainly shop for a new Sony flat screen TV. Your chances of having a long running TV is in your best interest. Thanks for asking and show all hands of support!
this set is getting up in years you have a weak CRT that is shutting down the pix
sony has what is call an IK curcuit that wants to see equal outputs on the crts so youget true color any way you need crts not avail anymore sorry
There are several parts that could be at fault and most are in the high voltage power supply.
If the flyback has failed it may not be available any more.
This isn't a DIY repair, it requires a little test equipment and knowledge.
If you have a TV repair shop (those who understand these are all in our 'golden years') you might ask the cost of a diagnosis.
I would recommend repairing it even if you decide to buy a new one and putting it, along with a DTV converter in a nice dry place so you can drag it back out when your lousy flat-panel set dies.
These are not lasting 10 years at all -
your problem is a stand-up printed curcuit pcb it has several mof those small surface mounted caps that always goes bad and the # on the part is SBX1981or SBX1981-51p its part # is 874213400 its about 11 to 15 bucks . Dont try to repair the part as the pcb is eaten up from the caps leaking all over it. Good Luck
