Question about Panasonic AG-DS555 S-VHS VCR

No video output

I have a video to DVD transfer business. Just bought a used ag-ds555 for a great price. Unit powers up and is very clean. All buttons work properly. Pop a tape in, connect to a monitor and receive audio but no video. Before I purchased the unit, I was informed of this problem. I'm open to ideas on a possible diagnosis? Thanks, Gregg Primus

I am getting the same issue "sort of" I get the time code and an error flashing LOW RF but also get sound and a pixelated or "still fuzz" screen behind the time code but no movable video. Any ideas?

I am not sure its a capacitor issue as I can see the time code on screen with no problem but I dont see any video moving behind it in TBC mode. I do see colors when I use the job dial on the device but no real video.

Can anyone suggest a tech that can replace the capacitors on the boards for a reasonable price. I have 3, AG-DS555s and 1, DS545 that all have the same problem with capacitors on the YC and IO boards.
BH Photo has these machines listed from 2000 to 4000 dollars.
I would even be willing to trade one of the machines to repair the others.

Surface mount electrolytic capacitors. These are located on the video boards inside the unit. An engineer or technician will know how to replace them. Hope this helps.

I replaced all the capacitors on the video boards as recommended by one solution and the problem no longer exist. This may help you. Thanks!

AG-DS555s are plagued by capacitor failure problems on all the video boards in the deck. Replacement of all surface mount electrolytic capacitors is the solution, but before you try that, give the heads a good cleaning. It's amazing what a miniscule amount of dirt on the heads will do.

I need the user manual for panasonic ag-ds555

I can't find one online either but the AG-DS850 manual should be extremely close if not the same (I can't see any differences in the front/rear controls except the model#): You can download the 850 manual here:

I just bought the dual headrest from walmart and can not get the sound to work the passenger side. can anyone help me with this?or possibly tell me how to get the sound through the stereo.

The monitor only headrest does not have audio handling circuitry in it. the wire harness for that side is the one with the red and black wire, and the two video inputs, not the harness with the red and black wire and the three RCA jacks. It will function on the wrong harness, but it is not the correct one.

The DVD headrest has two harnesses. One of them is for power and output, the other is for input only from another source. The harness with the red and black wire has the three RCA outputs... the video lead goes to the other headrest, and the audio can be fed to an aux input on a stereo or amplifier. The input harness is designed to be Video 2 input from either a gaming system (a Game Cube is a nice option), or another DVD or video source (hand held video device such as iPod or Smart Phone like a HTC Touch Pro 2).

To get sound out of the stereo, either run the audio output from the headrest to the aux input on your stereo, or cycle the FM transmit options using the FMTX button on the DVD player unit to a station you can tune to on your car's FM radio.

Seems like TBC won't lock, blue cast, picture unstable, weird colors, no contrast

change in stability after warm-up is a sign of defective capacitors. the DS550 and DS850 both are notorious for capacitor failures. don't touch the trim pots unless you have a service manual and a wfm/vectorscope.

How do I transfer hi 8 tapes to DVD without the working camcorder

Greetings jamhere,

I have the same issue myself with my gillion of family tapes and my Hi8 unit broken! The only remedy I have found is to either invest in a new lower price HI8 unit, rent a unit and get my transfers done, or pay to have the old tapes put on dvd professionally. None of these options are too appealing to me, but really seem to be the only options available. If only HI8 had an adapter like VHS-C! I personally would look on some of the online resellers to see if you can obtain a unit that is lower priced to meet your needs. Investing overall in a Hi8 as your only camcorder is not advised, due to it being almost obsolete technology.

I hope this helps.

Thank you,

Rolling static pattern

Solved! (I hope??).
The cable from the Keyspan to the AG-DS555 deck had an extension cable - when this was removed, the rolling specks disappeared!!! I tested the same set-up on a JVC DV deck and didn't see any problem?? But I suppose that S-VHS is much older technology - I hope that this was it!

Guess the moral of the story is - check every cable!
