Question about LaCie 500GB d2 Quadra 500 GB USB 2.0 Hard Drive

Can't accept Quadra 500 on my owerMac G5 Quad

Took delivery today on Quadra 500.  Shipping carton was too large and box was loose all the way from California.  Connected via firewire 800 and it never mounted.  Was told this drive was formatted for Mac but it appears that it's not.  Called MacMall, and they said to try the firewire 400.  Same problem.  I have an older LaCie 200MB drive that's worked fine for 4 years.  After the failure of the 500, the 200 wouldn't mount either (fw 400).  Wouldn't mount on my G4 laptop either.  Neither could be seen by disk utility.  However, the 200MB drive did mount using USB2.  I have a return authorization from MacMall.  Should I scrap LaCie and go with Western Digital.  Also, How can I get my 200 to work with firewire again.  Firewire connection works with digital video, so it's not the Mac.

Scrap LAcie!! Sounds like in this case, it may have been jostled around during shipping. None the less, Lacie drives are nothing more than bricks waiting to fail. Go Western Digital, but if oyu can, zip straight for Seagates!!!! Professional grade!! ALways check the cables, the ones that come with them are bottom bin cables, made by little singapore children with no fingers..... Invest in a good cables...a drive is only as good as the weakest datalink.

Cash on the warranty!!!

Keep me posted.

ry connecting the external hard drive to another computer to recover/backup your data.
When you have such a large capacity hard drive, it pays to have a second large capacity hard drive to backup your data in the event of the other hard drive dying.Hard drives do fail especially if you accidently drop it.

My LaCie 500GB Quadra spins and clicks. Have tried (Mac) DiskWarrior and Disk Utility, but the drive ignores them and spins, clicks, and the blue light flashes

If you can hear clicking then I am afraid there is a serious problem with the hard drive.

The noise you can hear is usually known as "the click of death" when referring to hard drives.

Make sure you use ONLY the cable that came with it or a SHORTER one.

Dont connect via a USB hub

Make sure you only user the power supply that CAME WITH IT.

Most common causes are that the drive unit was dropped or mishandled or just plain old age

There is no known cure unless the data is mission critical

In which case you could sent it to a data recovery specialist but this is usually VERY expensive.

If you are advised to place it in a freezer or anything similar then that is up to you
but my advise would be to run from the person who may give this advise.

This is very old fashioned advice and meant for very old types of drives that used to get very hot.

If it a drive that was / is from an external enclosure then you could still use the enclosure and just place a new hard drive in there.

Another way to test it it to remove it from the enclosure and connect it directly to a PC with a suitable interface eg. SATA or IDE.

Blu light flashing

This is most probably a faulty power cable, a common fault on La Cie apparently. Another cable got my disk working fine!

Drive not showing up on my desktop

i'm not sure i can solve this problem--which started for me tonight as well with my lacie d2 quadra 500 gb--but i can share a possible explanation i've found online: apparently, they have lots of problems with their power supplies. see if the power adapter (the black brick) is making a hissing sound, or if there is a ticking sound coming from the drive itself. i have both these sounds. i am hoping all my data is safe and that my i.t dept. will be able to fix it with a new power supply on monday.

Not showing up on my desktop

I had this same problem. I you are experiencing this problem and you have a Mac. Go to the LaCie web site there is a firmware update for this drive. Download the firmware update application from the LaCie website, start it and follow the directions. It should fix the problem.

Don't get it

I notice that you had issues initially installing the drive. Is it possible hat your actions as noted in the link corrupted the HFS+ formatting that was shipped on the drive?

Review this link

If as you noted THIS WAS THE FIRST TIME YOU USED THE DRIVE, you have no data on the drive to loose or recover.

Especially if you believe your actions may have corrupted the formatting of the drive, reformatting may be the appropriate response and could yield a working drive eliminating many return headaches. However if this does not seam reasonable contact with LaCie as to why the drive did not work directly out of the box may be appropriate. (I did confirm in the drive specs that the drive should have been formatted correctly for an apple computer -- windows users need to reformat the drive before they can use it )

I hope this helps
