Power I bought my Vac about a year ago for a home project, used it about an hour total, and when i went to use it today, it started to turn on, and then shut off. I thought i tripped a breaker, but that was not the problem. Very confused. George

I had a similar problem with a Shop Vac. The solution was to disassemble the power switch and polish the metal electrical contacts to remove any oxidation caused from humidity. Tedious and time consuming but effective.

It may have gotten hot if you went too long before cleaning the filter. It sounds like you may have burnt it up. I hope not! You might also check to see if you tripped a breaker on the electrical panel. Try plugging it in an outlet that is not on the same circuit. If it works in another outlet, then you have just tripped a breaker.
TOSS IT and forget it! I have never used a hand vac that worked that was worth the effort of turning it on .... I suggest they are all junk ... Sounds like the relay that is in the central vac unit is stuck to the ON position. When you plug it back in..does it start right up ? If so.. You should be able to disconnect all the receptacle feeds to the central vac unit at the central vac unit to determine which one ( if any) is calling for the vac to stay on.. if none are.. then it is internal to the vac and may be a stuck relay... Hope that gives you some ideas to check...
http://geeksquad.fixya.com/ThreadView.aspx?prdid=0&thid=761326 Generic problem for all Vacuums Drive went out on my Posted by buster_lls on Jul 09, 2008 Drive went out on my Hoover Steam Vac Shampooer and brushes won't turn plus there's a burning smell coming from it. Only used it 6 times - bought it in March - 2008. Hello, I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure. It sounds to me like you have multiple problems with your power drive; a burning smell and the brushes don’t turn, and the dop is on March, 2008 – the Hoover Steam Vac Shampooer has a one year factory warranty and it could be a broken part for the brushes won’t turn or a belt would cause the burning smell. If it is not the belt or broken part it probably is the motor of which you should take it to a authorized Hoover vacuum cleaner dealer in your area or to contact the Hoover factory cust serv listed below or the Hoover website for information. If it is the motor the factory authorized dealer will replace the part for the motor and the broken part for the brushes, if it is the belt that would be an out of pocket expense. So if you need further assistance, please feel free to contact your local vacuum cleaner dealer in your area or in the yellow pages, or contact the factory phone number or website to further assist you with your questions. http://www.hoover.com Telephone Contact our Customer Service Department at 1.330.499.9499 Monday through Friday 8 a.m. - 7 p.m. EST Thanks, Don the Vac Man Go Ahead. I bought a dirtdevil 8 years ago and it's still going. As long as the motor works then you have check to see if the brushroller turns. If not then check the roller belt (take the cover apart some have screws or lock tabs on bottom panel near wheels) If the suction is low then check the vac bag, also with bag off, turn on the vac to check if air comes thru.If not the inside tube is clogged(plastic bags, small objects, ect.)Also when you open the bottom panel to check the roller belt, check the flex pipe that sucks up to the vac bag(unclogg it).
