Microwave does not warm up food after big bang

Yesterday, I went to start the microwave and heard a big bang. Since then, although controls seem to function and fan starts (it does make a harsh noise), the oven does not get the job done (no warming up of food or liquids).
WHat may have gone bad? Should I have it repaired?

Sounds like stuck relay contacts. Magnetrons need a high voltage source which is controlled by a micro to relay and then from relay to voltage source. Even the turntable works via a relay.

If you try to heat something for a minute , the microwave will turn on for about 15 seconds then shut off . It doesn't even seem to warm the food.

It may need a reset. You can do that by unplugging the power for a minute or two, then plugging it back in and setting the clock.

If it still fails, you may have a failing cooling fan or a problem on the control circuit board.

That was the magnetron tube breaking. Too expensive to fix. Better to go and buy a new microwave.

GE Spacemaker arcing?

It is possible, but you heard a similar bang earlier, from the description the magnetron is arcing on a occassion because it is failing, or there is bare metal exposed on the interior. I would recommend getting it checked out to make sure there is no safety hazard and have it resolved.

I have the same problem. Everything seems to work except it doesn't heat up food.
I remember last time when it was working. I pressed the start botton before I closed the door. So it didn't start automatically, and I pushed start and it worked(it still heat up the food), but it doesn't work now. Help Please!!!
I have a Whirlpool Gold GH5184XPQ.

Thanks in advance

I would say the high voltage diode blew.

If you or a friend decide to look into it, we have critical safety and disassembly information at our site, linked here on Fixya:

You can get Sharp parts from Tritronics at

If it's not the high voltage diode, reply back for further help.

Loud Bang, then Light Stays On, Can't Cook

Something has failed in the high voltage supply to the magnetron. There are no user serviceable parts inside, but there are INSTANTLY LETHAL voltages present. Scrap the oven & get a new one, they are generally not worth reparing.
