Question about Carrier XHD183D Air Conditioner

1 Answer

Carrier XHD183D Through-the-Wall Heater/AC runs constantly

My Carrier XHD183D has started running constantly on heat or air conditioning, regardless of the thermostat setting. Sometimes, turning the thermostat dial back and forth a few times will start it cycling normally, again. When it runs constantly, turning the dial up or down does not produce the audible click that normally results in the unit starting up or shutting down. Do I need to replace the thermostat assembly?

YOU COULD EITHER HAVE A THERMOSTAT PROBLEM OR FAN CONTROL PROBLEM.TURN THE POWER OFF AT THE FURNACE AND TAKE THE THERMOSTAT OFF THE WALL.MAKE SURE YOU MARK THE WIRES SO YOU KNOW HOW TO HOOK IT BACK UP AGAIN.RESTORE POWER TO THE FURNACE.TOUCH THE WIRES THAT WERE HOOKED TO THE R & G TERMINALS ON THE T-STAT TOGETHER AND HOLD THEM THERE.OBSERVE THE OPERATION. WHEN YOU TAKE THEM APART DOES THE BLOWER STOP?TRY IT A FEW TIMES. IF IT CONTINUES TO START AND STOP YOU GOT A BAD T-STAT.JEFF

An air conditioning technician told me that my Carrier XCB183D (9 years old) needs to be replaced (not cooling sufficiently) but that model is no longer available. Is that true?

Thats very likely, they update and come up with more efficient units and discontinue the older models.
The compressor will lose effieciency over time.

Identify unit capacity.

The nameplate will provide a large amount of information, including the the manufacturer's name, model, serial, electrical requirements and the BTU rating or capacity that I believe you are looking for. Like the 120 volt sisters, the 240 volt unit should also have a nameplate. If unable to locate it on the chassis or frame of the unit in a similar location as the 120 volt, you'll have to look elsewhere. A www.google.com search on model number you provided (XHD183D) for this question indicates that it is a 17,900 BTU unit. If this is the correct model, case closed. If not, continue reading.

A good place to locate a nameplate if not plainly visible on the unit as it sits in the window would be on the chassis or frame behind the decorative grille. The grille is likely held in place by several clips and a screw or two. Shut off the AC and unplug it from the power source. Remove the filter as if to clean and carefully check for and remove screws and remove the grille.

I hope this helps!

I have a carrier wall heater with a remote, and I don't have the directions for the remote. I can't turn the heater on! I press the power symbol, but nothing happens.

Hi, Sally378, I may need to get any model numbers you may have for the remote or the unit to solve this. If this remote has batteries you may want to change them to see if this takes care of it. If not, send me the model numbers from both the remote and unit itself.
Sincerely,
Shastalaker7
