The buttons on the touch panel do not work correctly. The manual poses calibration of the LCD screen as a solution, however, the menu button necessary to do that does not work. When pressed, it gives the volume setting instead. So calibration is not an option. The reset button does not reset the personal menu buttons, so that is also not an option.
I am a bit amazed that their is no program reset possibility on the HDR-HC1
-   I have a similar problem. First the left hand buttons quit working. Then the touch screen started going out. Doing the flip screen flat against camera thing helped the touch screen. I'm guessing the ribbon cable is going out. Hopefully there's an inexpensive fix.

-   LCD screen not working. Pressing P-Menu takes me to volume as has been stated by another person. Evidently, this is a problem with this camera. Can't access menu to do anything. Reset button does not offer any fixes. Followed all of the instructions in the manual on how to recalibrate LCD. -   Kobena

-   had the same problem and did the same thing as suggested in the best solution. I have the menu all right, but again, the cable needs to be replaced-   freezy

-   I have the same problem and now the LCD screen has gone very dark. Saw another post that says the flex wire is cut. -   freezy

-   I have the exact same problem. The menu button takes me to the volume settings. So there's no getting to the correct screen to recalibrate the touch screen. Some touch screen functions work, but many do not - I can't delete anything off the memory stick, set the date or time, get back out of some menus without turning the camera off, etc.
I've tried disconnecting the battery and the power, then turning it on to change the settings to the factory settings, but this didn't help at all.-   pam2who
I've got the same problem ... LCD touch screen didn't work, then the screen went dark -- it's the ribbon cable. If you invert the screen flush against the camcorder, you should still be able to access the touch-screen menus (at least mine still work that way) -- to film, you have to use the eyepiece. But, ultimately, the ribbon connection - which is noted for failure -- has to be replaced.
Me too! The camera was working perfectly until yesterday and when I turned it on today, it selectively ignores some buttons on the screen - and pressing the "Menu" gives me nothing. I've tried to reset it through that pin hole button, but it just resets the machine back to its default.

- I wonder where could we get
a new flex flat cable to replace this faulty one. And I mean it: I'm not
willing to spend 300 bucks and send it for someone to fix it. I rather do it myself. On eBay perhaps? I found a user selling the whole gizmo: a flexcable WITH the LCD and touchscreen. He asks US$145 for it.

The touch panel does not work in flip out mode(standard mode). However, it works when you flip the panel to view on the side of the camera. The battery test worked and I can view from inside.
