Thinkpad T23 screen problem

The display on my T23 works on an external monitor but only very very faintly on the internal screen. I tried a replacement inverter and downloaded a video driver from Lenovo but no change. Tried also switching back and forth from external to internal screens and blank screen. Any ideas please?

Re: Thinkpad T23 screen problem

If you take the casing apart on your monitor and pull the chip out gentley, look at the ribbon wire that goes from the monitor to your computer. It may be cracked from opening and closing. That is what was wrong with mine and it sounds like we have the same problem. I had to use another montintor until my tech group could get me a new one. Hope this helps.

My IBM Thinkpad screen has gone dark but I can still see a bit. Is there a key to brighten the screen?

Try attaching an external monitor to the laptop & see if you could get any display on it. If this is successful, then you might have either a faulty LCD cable or screen inverter board.
The LCD cable transfers data signal from the motherboard & video card to the LCD screen. It also supplies high voltage DC power to the screen inverter board. The screen inverter board works as a power supply for the backlight lamp mounted inside the LCD screen. It converts low voltage DC power to high voltage AC power needed for the backlight lamp

Blank screen when turned on.sound is fine though.when i use external monitor it works on the external monitor.

Hi. I have 2 units of T23, 1 unit T22 and T30. All of them has the same problem as yours. 3 units has bad inverter and the other 1 has bad CFL. Inverters can be replaced but if you have bad CFL, it is better to replace LCD screen. If your problem is CFL, you will be able to see a very faint image on your LCD screen. If the LCD is completely black and you can't see anything, then it is an inverter problem.

Inverter is located below the LCD screen. You need to remove the LCD face plate to access the inverter. Please click here for the step-by-step instruction how to access the inverter or replace the LCD screen. Inverter and LCD are available at ebay.

Note: T23 has thin plastic parts that can be easily broken when disassembling.

Good Luck. Let me know further.

T23 Ibm laptop no video

Hello !

Test with an external monitor. If it works, it is the display's backlight or inverter board.

If you were experiencing discoloration in the screen (pinkish lower light hues) before it failed, that would indicate a CCFL backlight issue. If the screen suddenly went dim on you rather than a slow degradation the inverter would be indicated.

Hope this helps.

Monitor is blank when we turn the computer on.

Maybe not. Find the FN key. It is usually BLUE in color
Then look on TOP row of Computer keyb (or all over) and find CRT/LCD.
Press the FN and that key and your screen should come back. You accidentally sw. it to CRT (outside, external monitor)

Thinkpad t21 screen stopped working

If the computer seems to boot up just fine, but is not displaying a picture, take a flashlight and shine it at an angle on the screen, and see if you can see a very faint image of what should be displayed. If this is the case then the backlight bulb in your LCD panel has burned out. If you do not see anything on the screen at all even under a flashlight, then this could be indicative of a larger problem.

Hook the laptop up to an external monitor to make sure that you get a proper image on there first before you proceed. (Make sure that you try to change the laptop from internal video mode to external video mode if nothing shows up immediately. I have to press the Fn + F7 buttons on my T40p to tell it to use an external video monitor) If nothing shows up on the external monitor, then odds are that something else is wrong. Start by removing sticks of memory one at a time to see if they are causing the system to not boot up. (If memory is the problem, you should hear a series of beeps on startup though). Other complete video failure causes ussually have something to do with the Motherboard, orsome subsystem of it.

If you can see video on the external monitor, then either the LCD panel has gone bad, or the video cable has come unplugged. You can check this on most thinkpads by removing the keyboard and making sure that the video ribbon cable is securely in place.

Plugging into a different screen doesn't work

The Cold fusion lamp in your LCD and or the invertor board for the LCD could be bad that is the reason why a faint image . As for the external monitor you should enable it by the Fn+F5/F6/F7 key by pressing it twice at boot up before windows is fully loaded - this to ensure that the external monitor works with your laptop . If the resolution setting and frequency is not comaptible with external monitor you connect then you wont have display on your external monitor . Start windows in safe mode .

No visual display

Function F7 will enable the external video monitor connection and will toggle between the screen, the screen plus external monitor, and the external monitor only. Try hitting function F7 and see if that helps. Also there is a small switch that is activated when you close hte lid to turn off the display when the lid is closed. make sure that this little switch is not stuck.

No video on Ibm Thinkpad T23

i also have a t23, and i have messed around with the display a lot...
there are several things to consider:
1) your operating system. i would assume you are using windows xp, and that you dont get video even before the OS starts up in the first place, but its just something to consider: i have heard of some video bugs with the t23 under linux
2) you should check to see if the laptop display and the video out problems are related in the first place. to be honest, i dont know why they would or would not be related. the display not work because a) its just plain broken (although in this case there are usually some somewhat obvious cracks) b) the ribbon cable from the display to the motherboard could have ripped (they do so very easily). if the ribbon cable is ripped in its usual place, you MIGHT just not have a backlight. make sure that there is nothing on the screen, not just a normal display extremely dark. if theres definitely no picture, then you have to take the laptop most of the way apart, but you can start with just the screen casing. its fairly easy to figure out how to take apart, but you might want to look it up. behind the screen casing you can see the ribbon cable and whether or not its ripped. oh, but before you do that, try turning the led light on thats built into the top of the screen. its also part of the ribbon cable. you can do this by pressing the fn key and page down or something next to the brightness buttons. if that doesnt work then your ribbon cable is either ripped, or of course it could just be a motherboard problem in which case all of what ive said is fairly useless information. if you want you can also take off the keyboard and top casing from the screws in the bottom and look at where the ribbon cable (and maybe the video out too) meets the motherboard, just in case theres an obvious problem or disconnect. it probably wont be very obvious. however, if you do discover fairly surely that it is the ribbon cable, then you can get them for very cheap. search "ibm thinkpad lcd video cable t23"
hope i could be of some help

My Screen Is Black When I turn the Laptop On

When you say ?it turns on fine? I?m assuming that the power and hard drive LEDs turn on. If that is the case it could be your LCD backlight giving you problems. With the computer on and the monitor power LED green shine a flashlight in the lower left hand corner of your screen. Look for the ?Start? button, if your backlight is not working you?ll see a faint ?start? button if you look closely. This is usually an economically repairable problem but not for the typical home user. Let us know if you have any other questions and please don?t forget to rate this posting.
