Dark pictures

I have an Exilim EX-Z40 which i download to an apple powerbook via the USB link. The pictures when printed out look rather 'grey' rather than bright. This was very obvious when the camera SD card was recently printed out direct from a photolab rather than from the computer and compared to those printed out from the computer. The former were very 'bright' with fuller colours.
SHould I be doing something different when connecting camera to computer?
