My brother had the same problem. We tried everything and in the end took it back and they replaced it. It had something to do with the disc reader. They said it only happens to a few but enought to know that they will replace it on the spot. He got he's at Harvey Norman so I hope were ever you got yours they will honour the policy as well.

When a unit does that it can be a fingerprints on a disc not letting it read the disc and or also that it is not finalized. Can also be a disc format that does not work on unit. Some units only work with either -R or +R and not both. Hope this helps
The cd tray eject after put in the DVD movies, but VCD working fine...it is means that the drive's region code haven't set yet .(please refer to user manual to setting the region code) ..or unplug the recorder drive from the dvd player, using the computer setting to change the region code by connecting to computer's IDE cable .
Well I have been repairing dvd players a while now and the main problem spots are laser ,spindle motor, laser tracking motor and the biggest culprit and un suspecting one the lens cable .....most of them range from the lens cable to the spindle motor though... the constant movement of the lens in watching a whole movie causes the cable to unknowingly and slowly break and if the spindle motor is defective ,on inserting a dvd the disc spins slowly and you may hear the lens chirping ... so you can check those....
