Yea Darkfinger the spindle I refer to is the disk drive spindle. All connections look good, and to re-iterate the thing that I notice is that the same problem is apparent on two seperate laser pickup assembles. The laser focus's but dosent see the disk because it does not spin

    Thanks gordo

Did you try putting the laser reader in your origional lazers place? you might have forgotten a connection, but other than that, im not shure why that would happen unless you broke the connector, or the connector somehow comes undone after you close the ps2 back up. also, have you tried it when you have a cd in it with the safety mechanisms overrided? it should rest in the full out position when you turn it off while a cd is playing in the last track. and just to clarify, is the spindle the linear actuator that moves the lazer head or the thing that turns the cd?

Ps2 slim spindle dont spin

If your spindle has stopped spinning, it will most likely be 1 of 2 problems. Either your spindle motor has burnt up, or even though it is very unlike, a lead wire that supplies the power to the spindle has became disconnected. Now, if the case it the burnt up spindle motor, there are hundreds of motors for every kind of PS on, of course, E-Bay. If the problem is for some reason, a soldered wire has broken from the motor. It is very simple to re-attach the lead with a quick touch from a soldering iron. I hope this has helped.

Ps2 drive failure in slim models

My PS2 has been played so long, let those PS2's run for a minute, usually it takes a minute or two kicking on for those, I have one that takes a while to kick on. If that doesn't work then you just can't do anything, sounds like something is just messed up, when I have a spare PS2 i'll drop it and see what happens for you.

Disc doesnt spin , the lens dont move up and down , only lights red

Sounds like a motor issue, not a laser issue.

Won't work. disk won't turn

sounds like a faulty spindle. this is the part that spins your cd for the laser to read. if your using a fat ps2 its prolly the spindle. if your using a slim ps2 it could be the laser causing the problem not the spindle. the slim ps2 laser make the spindle work. if the laser isnt working right the cd might not spin or it might not spin fast enough or flat enough.

PS2 Slim New Lens, Not Spinning

Hi guys,
Well, there is 2 switch. one at  the back left of the cd tray and one one the reset /power switch. both sitch have to be close in order for the disk to spin.
If you try this dont forget to put a disk on the spindle as you will start the laser. this is for your safety. then, if the disk does not spin, then you can try replacing the laser. or at least verify the ribbon cable that is hook to it. if the ribbon cable is not well inside the plug the laser might move but again the disk won t spin.
it is related to each other, the PS2 seem to verify the laser prior to start the spindle so what ever happend to the laser affect the spindle.
and then, if you buy a new laser lens, don't forget to remove the soldering bridge. it is a small ball that is use to avoid static while shiping the lens.
most of the seller will include a small peace of paper with procedure and also there is web site with picture of this soldering bridge.
I replace some of them, and I have to say that the small plastic lock for the ribbon  cable to the lens has been an issue and the soldering bridge another one.
but I got most of the PS2 back and running by replacing the laser.
I hope this will help you.

Disc wont work

Hi AdalVI,

Your PS2 probably has a dirty laser lens. Below is a procedure for cleaning the lens on the big PS2. It does not work on the Slim PS2. Do not ever use alcohol on a slim PS2 laser lens.

I hope your in the right posting area, this is for the Phat PS2 consoles with the drawer that comes out to put the CD in. Procedure is different for Slim PS2.
  1. Disconnect power and turn the case upside down.
  2. Remove the screw covers to expose the case screws. These are little square pieces or square rubber pads. You can use a thin knife blade to pry the hard plastic squares up.
  3. Remove all the screws.
  4. Remove the Warranty sticker to the right edge of the power socket.
  5. Turn the PS2 over to set it right side up.
  6. lift the top cover from the back and pull it forward slightly to clear the CD tray. Be careful of a possibly Ribbon cable attached to the lid going to the Reset/Eject buttons. Roll the cover over to the right leaving the ribbon intact.
  7. Remove the CD tray lid.
  8. Polish the Laser lens, and remove any lint or hair from the CD area. Use Alcohol and cotton swabs to clean the laser lens. By the way, Alcohol will damage a PS2 Slim lens. All lens are not created equally.
  9. Hook up the power and A/v Cables.
  10. Remove the little white disc from the CD tray lid.
  11. Place a Disc on the spindle, and cap the disc with the little white piece that you removed from the CD tray cover.
  12. Boot up the PS2 and test it, Continue cleaning until you get it to work.
  13. Put it back together, and you’re in business.
If you have trouble you can send your PS2 to a Repair shop. Click on "Repair Directory" at the bottom of this screen. then choose "Video Game Consoles". Then you pick a Good Repair shop. My shop is listed, but I cannot divulge the name in this forum. Cost will be $25 plus shipping. Shipping is usually $8.95 to the USA

Disks wont spin on new laser

Did you remove the anti static solder blob (point) on your new laser with a soldering iron and solder wick prior to installing it? The symptons your explaining indicate that point is still intact, If so you will need to carefully remove it first then reinstall the laser and try again.

Disk wont spin

First of all the new laser lens will not allow your Slim to read NTSC UC games if you have a PAL european Console.

There is no reason the New laser should have not read the disc unless it Came to you damaged. It sounds like you know how to replace a laser.
