When the thermostat is turned to "HEAT" the compressor kicks on and a slight burning smell emits from the air return but the blower never turns on. When the thermostat is turned to "OFF" for several minutes following and then back to "HEAT" the blower occasionally turns on for a couple minutes before again shutting off leaving the compressor running and releasing the burnt dust smell.

If i understand your problem description correctly when power is on but the furnace is not running you can smell burning dust and feel heat? first thing i can think of is possible a heater relay has gone bad keeping the heater on all the time but no fan...

I have in Intertherm gas furnace. The system runs, hot air comes out of the vents, but it smells like burnt plastic, and the red light on the circuit board is lit up...

There is a short circuit developing in an electrical circuit in the furnace. Do not turn it back on and call a service technician to examine it.

This could be failure of the igniter and/or thermocouple.

Intertherm furnace burner comes on, but blower does not. If I turn thermostat off then back on until it clicks the fan will then come on. It does not do this all of the time, just now and then.

Furnace burner and heat element are not the same. I think the fan time delay, a sensor that turns the fan on when this sensor senses heat, is shot and needs replacing, for a furnace type heat ( gas heat)

I have an intertherm electric furnace. the heat coils heat up then system shuts down

It is possible that high temp limit is shutting you down.make sure your blower is running when t-stat is calling for heat.if notstart at the heat sequencer which cuts the blower on with first bank of heat. it will be dangerous and difficult to troubleshoot this prob without a multimeter and experiance with elect. components

Intertherm Furnace Will not stay on

Your furnace is likely getting too hot check your filter. make sure the fan is running. if you have weak air flow you may have a blocked heat transfer coil. you should have your heating and cooling system serviced yearly by a qualified company to inspect and test equipment.

Smell Coming From Intertherm Furnace

It could be several things.

The most alarming being a cracked heat exchanger allowing the exhaust fumes to enter the living space.

Exhaust fumes that contain carbon monoxide.

I HIGHLY RECCOMEND that you purchase carbon monoxide detectors, and/or check the batteries in any you might already have.

Carbon monoxide can be deadly at high concentrations.

It could be burning wires, but would smell like burnt rubber.

It could be mold/mildew but would smell musty like dirty socks.

It could be a build up of dust oil etc on the heat exchanger, but that is usually only smelled when it is started up for the first time in months.

Make sure the filters are clean. Dirty filters can cause overheating of the heat exchanger and sometimes cause smells.

This is one of those times I will recommend you have a professional look at your unit.
Specifically the heat exchanger to look for cracks.

A pro will know where to look, where the usual stress points are etc.
