It's usually a software conflict.
If you have multiple scanning programs, the one of them may have it locked. Especially if you have a scanning program that runs as a service.
Most of the time I solve this problem by cleaning the scanner. You have to clean it real good. Take out the scanner bulbs and clean underneath the bulb sockets. You may not be able to do this. You may want to call a tech.
I'm guessing you are using the USB version and the power that comes from the comuter via the USB cable.
It is quite likely that the problem you are having is due to power sag. .500ma is the limit from P.C. s
Do you have a 15 foot cord on there? If so try a 6 foot cord. Sagging still occurs with a 6 foot cable ...but only half as much. If the problem goes away you are on the right track.
I have a cable (I should say Motorola has a cable) with a separate power supply that should fix the problem.
