My console has Error Code 0020. What caused this and how can it be fixed? If I choose to buy a new 360, can I use the old HDD or is it damaged as well?
First, my xbox would have one red light and E 74. Then when I opened it
up and booted it I got three red lights and 0020. I took out the
motherboard, replaced the heatsink compound and did the x-clamp fix,
but I couldn't get nylon washers in the right size so i just used no
washers at all. Varying the tightness of various x-clamp bolts gave me
0020, 0003, 0002, 0001, or it would boot up to the black screen and I'd
get E 74 again. Other times the xbox would almost immediately overheat.
Most of the time I would get 0020, though. At that point, I gave up and
I just tightened up the bolts replacing the x-clamp a certain way
(nothing seemed special about it) and put the motherboard back in the
case without testing it. I screwed everything back together, and since
the heads of the bolts were thicker than they should have been, the
motherboard didn't really sit flat in the metal cage. But i just
screwed the motherboard back into the cage not to tight with the 9
small silver screws, which I would imagine put some stress on the mobo.
Then I pu the rest of the case on and the 6 long screws, and once I had
snapped everything back together I tried booting it up. To my great
surprise it booted up fine! I played some halo 3 and it has booted up
fine every time (3 times) since then
Many people have got this error You need to replace the xclamp and make sure there's
extra pressure (less than half a turn) on the front right corner of the
GPU. You can read more about xclamp replacement here.
its not an issue with ur HDD so no worries....

Hi, "E74"error code is caused by a memory storage device attached to the Xbox 360 encountering a hardware error. You can try to remove the HDD and restart the console without it, if the E74 code won't appear it means that you need a HDD replacement. But if it still does appear, there is a general hardware failure in the system and it might require servicing. You can contact Microsoft Xbox Support for it to be fixed, out of warranty console will be charged $99 dollars by the way. The warranty period is three years. Thank you !!
1) Remove your hard drive and/or memory units. 2) Run "Initial Setup" under the system blade. 3) Decline inserting HDD or memory unit when prompted. 4) Sync your controller and pop in a game.
Open your Xbox again, remove the motherboard and take off the heat sinks.
Clean the heat sink compound off of the the CPU, GPU, and both heat sinks using 91% alcohol. The CPU & GPU should be as shiney as a mirror when your finished.
The next step is to apply Artic Silver 5 Thermal compound to both processors using just enough to cover the processors, then put your system back together again and give it a try.
If it still doesn't work you may want to try to find someone who knows how to do a reflow. If you go this route, becareful who you choose. Ask for referrals and most importantly, ask for a picture of the equipment they will use to "attempt" to fix your Xbox.
If you get a picture of a standard Heat Gun... find someone else.
Be aware that even after a reflow, your Xbox is still subject to failure again. Microsoft can't even fix them permanently.
You're already familiar with opening your Xbox and taking it apart so you may want to consider learning how to do a reflow yourself.
There's also the option of buying a new Xbox but there's a good chance you'll still be facing another failure in the future. the difference will be that the new Xbox will be covered under warranty for a period of time depending on the problem.
I've heard that new consoles with a Jasper cpu tend to be more reliable but I've not seen any scientific data to back up this claim.
Good luck, I'm in the same boat with 2 broken and have decided to buy a reflow station to repair my own instead of paying Microsoft.

error code 0020 is currently unkown, however it is possibly overheating. and 0021 is caused by a timeout on the dvd drive or a GPU error, try re-heating the chips using a blow dryer on low heat for 10-15mins.
Buy a heat gun and follow this tutorial http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=651407
You MUST take off heatsinks. I should fix your 0020 problem.
