Got the Nuvi 680 home. Connected with my phone via bluetooth no problem. Then I updated my phone with updater. Now the MSN does not work, Bluetooth is disabled, attempting to enable it shows a enabling screen and nothing else.

My Nuvi 770 (2 days old) suddenly locked out the maps and was unable to unlock them. Also the Bluetooth simply froze on Enable.

Not good - looks like a replacemnt device is needed here.

    Not impressed!!

same problem not able to activate bluetooth and unable to unlock maps. called garmin i was told to return to retailer not even any diagnostics run, must be a fault with the software that they cannot correct. hope that the next one doesn't do that

  • Larry44 Jan 20, 2008

Identical problem - Nuvi 770 worked fine until I activated Bluetooth.  Reset and the got "unable to unlock maps".  Unit now will not turn-on or reset.   Have not contacted Garmin yet.

I have the same problems since I bought on 15th dec. 2007. I have phoned Garmin once and they fixed the "can't unlock maps" problem, but they couldnt fix the frozen "enabling bluetooth" problem. I have e-mailed them about 10 times now and they were trying to fix the problem. I had to send them screen shots of the garmin folder. But now they won't answer my e-mails. They obviously have a bigger problem, and not interested in me.

Nice one Garmin. It's only my money!

Nuvi 770 - Maps can't be unlocked, and I also cannot enable Bluetooth.

Would the person who managed to get their maps unlocked post information on how that was accomplished?

  • Anonymous Mar 14, 2008

Bought my unit on 11th March. Connected everything, made a call on bluetooth tested routes etc. following day I turned the unit on and realised that bluetooth was disabled, when i try to enable it freezes on the "enable bluetooth" screen and wont budge!

Called Garmin they tried to tell me my phone is incompatible - doesn't really answer the question of why I can't enable. I will be returning unit to Retailer and asking for a refund!

nuvi 770 cannot unlock maps how do i resolve this??

  • Madpeter May 22, 2008

Hi I have just purchased the Nuvi 770, I enabled bluetooth and found my phone , made some calls everything was fine. The next day Bluetooth was disabled on the Nuvi, I enabled it and the screen came up to say "Enabling Bluetooth". This is frozen on the screen and only turning off and on again removes this, Bluetooth is still disabled and I can not use the phone features any more. I tried solution #1 and it did not make a difference. Anything else to try or send it back to Garmin

Hi. I purchased a Nuvi 770 yesterday. When I switched it on the maps were locked and so was the bluetooth. Also The POI werent there. I contacted Garmin who gave me a fix. It worked to unlock the maps but not the bluetooth. Then after contacting them again they gave me a fix for the Bluetooyh which didnt work. I returned it today to my retailer who was great and replaced it. Guess what. I turned on the replacement and everything worked great.........for a couple of hours and bingo exactly the same thing happened. Maps and bluetooth are locked. Can someone recommend another device with the same or better spec that will actually stay working? Please Help. This thing has stressed me.

14 Day the nuvi 770 works well also the Bluetooth-connection to the Sony-Erricson and now, i have the same problem. I am well trained to unlook maps, but when I enable Bluetooth, it hangs on the message 'enabling Bluetooth' and nothing go on. Garmin UK send me an older Version to replace remote SW Folder, but nothing changes.

I did the following steps and my Nuvi 680 bluetooth is working good now.
Please try these:

Thank you for contacting Garmin International, I am sorry that you are having this issue. You may need to reset your
1) From the Nuvi main "Where To?" screen, tap "View map"
2) On the map screen, tap the "speed" indicator in the lower left corner of the screen.
3) On the next screen, there is a large round speedometer (mph) near the top center of the screen. Press and hold on the center of the speedometer until the screen changes to a diagnostic mode that says "Shutdowns" at the top.
4) Press "Next"at the bottom of the screen repetitively until you come to a screen that says "Bluetooth statues" at the top...
5) On the Bluetooth Statues screen, press "Updt PR" button in the lower right corner. The screen should show "Do you really want to update the Bluetooth firmware?"... Press "yes"... Let the unit sit for several minutes. It should show "Updating Bluetooth on the screen. When it is complete, it will return to the "Bluetooth Statues screen.... Press "Quit" in the lower left corner... Then return to the main "Where To?"
screen and try enabling and paring the Bluetooth again?.
Additionally, it is best to pair the devices from the cell phones menus and pairing procedures, instead of from the Garmin device......
Note: before re-pairing the Nuvi to your cell phone, make sure you remove the nuvi device fr your cell phone first, then add device. If your nuvi bluetooth still fails after you do this step, then your nuvi bluetooth file maybe corrupted. You will need to download this file and reinstall it to your Nuvi

Casio G'Zone Boulder (Verizon) could not connect to Garmin Nuvi 680 - SOLVED!

I had tried connecting to my Nuvi 680 without success, using firmware 4.11 to current as well as updating the bluetooth firmware (sorry, didnt pay attention to rev. numbers). The Casio Boulder was purchased in the last month. With my previous version Casio G'Zone, bluetooth functioned perfectly, so I suspected it was a problem with the Nuvi.

The Nuvi would not connect to the phone via nuvi->phone or vice versa; The phone's bluetooth ID would show on the screen, as well as the Nuvi's bluetooth ID appearing on the G'Zone when pairing was attempted via that method. However when trying to establish the connection, an error stating "device pairing incomplete" is as far as I could progress.

Solution: Make sure bluetooth is turned ON and navigate to the main menu of the Nuvi. Pair devices via phone->nuvi. SHABAM! It works!

Of note: Upon receiving my first incoming call while connected to the Nuvi, my phone did a soft reset and locked itself. However, I have not experienced that issue since then - everything works fine now.

I received the same instructions from Garmin support as SMCTito, but after I did step 5, the UPDT PR, it still froze when I tried to activate bluetooth. When I got to that screen on a second try, I noticed that bluetooth was already enabled, and the update step turned it off. So I tried the same steps without doing step 5, and now the bluetooth is working. I did not go back and enable bluetooth, it was on. I have a nuvi 680. Note that I connected the nuvi to my computer and reloaded the file in the RemoteSW folder. It did not seem to matter if there were two files or which version I loaded, contrary to some other instructions I've seen. I just took the file out and put it back in the folder, and the device thinks it needs to update the bluetooth firmware when you restart it.

I had a few pixles out on the first one from Amazon and they sent me a replacement overnight, now I have the problem of can't unlock maps, I guess I will send this one back as well, but I hate returning the same product over and over.

Posted on Jun 17, 2008

Just my two cents...

I was having the same symptoms as described above, which my unit froze when I try connecting an approved bluetooth device. After restarting the unit the bluetooth was disable. First I update my firmware and map software from Garmin's website. Second, follow the steps outlined from SMCTito and it work flawlessly. Note I did not call technical support but wanted to try the method outline first but I did go into their support website and could not find an answer. If Garmin tries to cut corners like Magellan there will be loosing some serious market. Please Garmin don't ignore your customers. Remember who provides the profit... Thank you.

I have since received a replacement unit and it works fine. Occasionally I have a bit of trouble getting the bluetooth between my HTC WM5 PDA/Phone and the Nuvi 770 to engage.

Sometimes I have full access to the phonebook - other times it doesn't see it.
Trial and error usually gets it going again - when it does work it's great.

Mapping seems fine and general functionality appears normal.

It would seem however having read the other posts, that I was not alone, and the problem with the locking up of the maps is a glitch about which Garmin are more than painfully aware.

If you bought the device from a store within 30 days of the problem presenting itself you should be entitled to a complete replacement without having to go through Garmin.

Expect a firmware update soon? I think so.

Hi I have had the same problem with my 770 the unlock maps is an easy fix if you call Garmin UK support they just get you to create 2 new files with licence numbers but the bluetooth problem is still a pain. I have tried 4 different fixs given to me by garmin and they do not work..Laugh they even said they were unaware of a major problem with the blue tooth..I told them to look on the web

I had the same problem. I downloaded the updates, and then it said Can't Unlock Maps, no POI's, and it sat on the Activating Bluetooth forever. The tech support guy walked me through resetting, and the final solution was also return it for repair. I returned it to Amazon, and they are overnighting a replacement. The next one better act right.. For $730, I'm not playing

Posted on Jan 04, 2008

I had the same problem and Garmin Tech Support guided me through resetting the unit and reinstalling the latest software and firmware. Their final suggestion was to send it in for repair, so instead I returned it to the store where I bought it.

Audio goes to phone only

In your phone, there should be a preferences to push the audio over to the Bluetooth as a "audio device" like a Bluetooth Headset. I know I can do it on Android... My Garmin kept grabbing my BT over my headset - so I changed the prefs in BT settings to not use the GPS for Audio... its just a slide/check box...

What isthe microphone on my garmin nuvi 205 for if it doesn't have voice activation or bluetooth?

Hi, The manual for your Garmin covers quite a few models with differing features. As the 205 is the entry level unit for the range, it is very likely that the microphone is not even installed. The microphone is only used for the handsfree feature.

I have a Garmin Nuvi 680 I would like to use it as a hands off cell phone in my vechile. I no little about blue tooth. How do I go about getting my cell phone to work with my Garmin. Thanks Joe

Hi Joe,

1. First, you have to turn your bluetooth function (power) on your phone on. See your phone manual.

2. On your Nuvi, press the wrench symbol, then the bluetooth symbol. Press the option to enable bluetooth on your Nuvi. You will know that it is enabled when you see the bluetooth logo at the main menu on your Nuvi.

3. While in the bluetooth menu of your Nuvi, press the ADD button. It will tell you to turn the bluetooth function on your phone, which you should have already done in step #1.

4. Your Nuvi will start searching for your phone and if it finds it, the brand name will show up on your Nuvi's screen. Select the phone model and press OK. It will then tell you the pass key code. On your phone it will ask if you want to pair with your Nuvi. Select yes and enter the pass key code into your phone. This is usually 1234.

That's it. Your Nuvi will say you can now make phone calls. When you unit is paired to your phone and the bluetooth is turned on your phone, you will see a telephone handset at the main menu. Press that and you'll be able to select options to speak the phone number, enter it manually, transfer your phone address book to your Nuvi, etc......

If your phone isn't recognized by your Nuvi, make sure you have the latest bluetooth firmware on your Nuvi. It can be updated with Garmin's webupdater program available on their website.

Garmin bluetooth won't disconnect call

Solution below works for NUVI660 as well; ignore everything after step 6 but DO reboot and delete previously existing connections.

good luck

I was having the same problem with my Curve and Nuvi 680. What has fixed this for me is downgrading the Bluetooth firmware version on the Nuvi itself. I was running version 3.0 (you can check your version by going to Settings -> System -> About on the Nuvi) -- I had success after downgrading to version 2.4.

It's a bit of a convoluted process, but here is the procedure I followed:

1. Download the old Nuvi BT firmware from the Garmin Italy website:

2. Connect your Nuvi to your PC.

3. Go into the X:GarminRemoteSW and look for a file called 006B055301.GCD (where X: is your Nuvi drive)

4. Back up that file to your
computer, and delete it from the Nuvi.

5. Extract the file in the zip downloaded in step 1 to the X:GarminRemoteSW directory

6. Disconnect your Nuvi from your computer, and let it

7. Click on "View Map," then touch the "Speed" in the lower left corner.

8. You should have the "Dashboard" view up. Touch and hold the "Moving Average" box for ~15 seconds until the diagnostic screen appears.

9. Press the "next" button until you arrive at the "Bluetooth Status" screen (5-6 screens in)

10. Click "Updt PR" and then click "Yes"

11. Reboot the Nuvi, delete the existing bluetooth pairing, and attempt to re-pair with your BlackBerry.

Seems to work perfectly now -- please let me know if you have any questions. Good luck!

My Garmin 680 bluetooth stopped working w/ my LG Vx8600

I have found the only thing that works thus far is to click on the red phone in progress icon then go to "call options" then click transfer audio to phone, then transfer audio to nuvi. Sometimes I have to do this twice. but it works.
