The xbox 360 optical drive is "married" to the motherboard via a key code. The optical drive is not plug and play. The only way to accomplish this is to swap the card from the old drive into the new, or extract the keycode from the old and reflash to the new.

Hi dropndeal, I'm having the same xbox360 disk drive problems. Do you know where I can find the steps to swap the card from the old drive to the new? Or reflash it? Which is easier?
Thanks!
Laurie
First step is to ensure you have the exact same optical drive. If yours originally contained the Benq X800474-006, then you are good with step 1.
The replacement must be identical. In other words, if originally a Hitachi or Samsung, then the replacement must be Hitachi or Samsung.
Now you must open the previous as well as your brand new unit (yes, this voids the warranty). The Card from the old unit must be removed and placed in your new optical drive. Take your time and be very careful. Soon you will be back up and running.
A very good tutorial is here:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Wajuuo_C...
Let me know if this helps.
