Dlink wireless router (DL-634M) and windows XP

My woreless connection is not working. To send this email I have attached the cable from the router to the PC and am now online. If I disconnect the will stop working and say not connected. I am running windows xp and McAfee Security. I have configured the connection as open with encryptions disabled. What's weird is I havent changed anything in a long time but the connection stopped working Friday and now I'm attached to the cable. The only thing that has changed on my PC in a while is a renewal to McAfee which I think I updated on Thursday night...don't know if that could have anything to do with it.

I do not claim to understand the configuration or how these things work together but I tried some simple stuff.

  • I disabled McAfee's firewall protection to see if that made a did not.
  • Cabled directly in to our WildBlue fine.
  • Rebooted the wireless router with both the wildblue cable and the PC cable connected, only works while PC cable is connected
  • Rebooted PC with cable connected to dlink...worked for a few minutes after disconnecting the cable but would not send an outgoing email and then disconnected. I only got back on after reconnecting the cable (again from the dlink router to the pc)
Any ideas?? I am too frustrated.

No, sadly it doesn't support WDS (Wireless Distribution System), most of the time I prefer Linksys routers since are easy to configure and WDS capable, if you get two of them I'm sure you can establish a WDS network easily.

Try RESETTING the D-Link back to the default settings.
Press and hold the RESET button at the back of the routerwith the power ON until the LEDs flash at the time the release the RESETbutton.
Connect a LAN cable from the D-Link to your laptop/computer's LAN port, openthe browser on your laptop/computer and enter the D-Link's configuration URL..
The default login = admin
The default PW = blank (just press Enter) You can now change the default password.
You can now configure the wireless settings. To secure your wireless network from unauthorized access,please click on this link and follow my instructions :-

Connecting D-Link DI-634M to HughesNet HN9000

I hate it when ISPs give you devices that dictate how your network has to be setup. They should just give you a modem which give a public IP to whatever connects to it.

For this to work you have to connect the cable from the hughes box to your router on one of the four regular jacks on the back NOT the internet/wan jack you would normally use.

Set the IP of the Dlink to
Subnet mask
default GW

This SHOULD allow the router to act like a switch. I have a linksys that has an option to make it function as an access point , which is what you need for this modem, but I dont see any option for the d link you have to do that.

Hughes have a knowledgebase which may be of some use to you.

Wireless network has disappeared !

If I understand your post/description:
1. You have both wired and wireless clients tied to the DLink DI-634M router;
2. The 1st PC is a desktop that uses Ethernet connections to the DLink and is currently working;
3. You have another (2nd) PC (a laptop?) that is connect by WiFi to the router. This is not working now;

I think that your issue may have to do with the Wireless networking of your 2nd PC, i.e. if you can access (DLink DI-634M) from the 1st PC that is wired.

Should this be the case or the scenario is different, pls post back.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back as requested or should you be in need of additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.
